There’s been a buzz for weeks, a constant buzz about Wolfgang Gartner (Joey Youngman). The amount of attention this Austin, Texas native is receiving continues to grow and impress. Here’s the reason why, the American producer/DJ just released his anticipated debut album Weekend In America on September 20th via Ultra Records (which is the leading dance music label, btw). The 11 track album features guest appearances from Eve, Dipset’s Jim Jones and Cam’ron, Omarion and Will.i.am. Now that is a heavy list of urban artists featured on an electronic album but it works. The album is definitely a banger and I understand what the buzz is about. Now, the one track that I can’t stop listening to is “Circus Freak” featuring Jim Jones and Cam’ron. It’s highly energetic; I can already see this track being used for various music trailers because it can get a crowd of people shaking their bums like their getting paid for it. Besides the lyrical tracks, the two favorite instrumental cuts, “Illmerica” and “Menage A Trois”are bangers. In fact, “Menage A Trois” claimed the top spot of #1 on the UK’s “Cool Cuts”electronic music charts. Sadly, one track that didn’t make the album is “Cognitive Dissonance”which is a genius instrumental track. The song actually ranked #4 on Hype Machine’s Popular charts recently and continues to rise. Gartner did make the track available as a bonus track on iTunes. The one song that I wasn’t thrilled with ended up featuring Omarion, “Still My Baby,” would’ve been better as an instrumental. No offense to Omarion but the track lost its edge with his voice. Overall, Wolfgang Gartner’s album receives two thumbs up. He actually won over a fan because the songs grow into liking after every play.
Wolfgang Gartner will promote Weekend In America in the States throughout September until November. Also, Wolfgang Gartner and Ultra Records have partnered up with Spin magazine and Beatport to host a flyaway sweepstakes for fans until October 14th, the winner will be chosen on the 15th. The prize is actually gnarly but I’m disqualified since I’m not 21 yet. If you’re over 21, enter. The winner and a friend will get the star treatment to a few of Wolfgang Gartner shows—round-trip airfare, hotel, two tickets and VIP access to each show, ground transport to and from the airport and venue, plus a $100 credit at Beatport. Sounds pretty sweet. Plus (or a minus depending on your cultural views) a year subscription to that crappy magazine that recently tried to pull off a “Dubstep 101” cover story.
We feel like all the hype behind Wolfgang Garnter is warranted… The year he put into Weekend in America will surely pay off—just listen to his work; the guy is talented. Pick up the album via Beatport here.
