The folks down at Gomma records have been working over time this year with the Peaches release, a huge disco compilation and now the highly anticipated KDMS album.

Meeting on myspace.com back in 2008, British disco diva Kathy Diamond and Polish producer Max Skiba formed KDMS. Alone their resumes are impressive. Diamond has worked with Aeroplane, Toby Tobias and Low Motion Disco, and released her solo debut Miss Diamond For You in 2007. Skiba, though relatively new on the scene, has remixed for Flippo Moscatello, Ajello, and the Dutch Rhythm Combo, as well as released a solo EP on Skylax Records. Since the 2009 release of the duo’s first single, “Never Stop Believing” they have received praise and plays from disco titans such as Tim Sweeny, Dimitri from Paris, Horse Meat Disco and Emperor Machine.

Their debut album, Kinky Dramas and Magic Stories, continues on with the slow scorching disco listeners would expect based on the singles, but it also comes together as a well-done pop album. To limit them in the indie/nu-disco genres would be stifling as Skiba’s drum choice, sound selection, and minimalist production style complement Diamond’s vocal talent. Although Diamond, perhaps intentionally, never demonstrates her full vocal range and power, together they break through the expected “smoothness” and “retro” feel that many artists in this genre limit themselves to. “No Sad Goodbyes” and “Your Love Is Right” have uniquely '90s house melodramatic qualities, while “Killer” has Nordic elements with its stage show similarity. If it was place on the classic disco album time lines, think of Kinky Dramas and Magic Stories is much more The Wanderer than Once Upon a Time.

The Diamond/Skiba combo is working, as indicated not only by the testimonials from the modern disco community, but also by their remix roster, with Justin Kohncke making a synth grinding remix of “Wonderman” and stuff of legends Morgan Geist remixing “Tonight.” Names like these have been signing on to the KDMS for a while now, which is testament to the artistic integrity and talent found in Kathy Diamond and Max Skiba. Watching them double down on their already notable careers is a welcome excitement.

Kinky Dreams and Magic Stories is out April 30th on Gomma Records.
