I’m a little jealous of New Yorkers right now. At least of the ones going to this Space Cadet Headphone Concert this week. Taking the idea of a headphone concert to another level, Kid Koala’s version has you, the audience, sitting in inflatable space pods while you listen through individual headphone systems as Koala brings his Space Cadet score to life by way of piano, several turntables, a live light installation and a stencil/shadow show drawn from the book. Part music, part storytelling, this’ll surely be a good time.

If you’re really into the whole idea of this Space Cadet concert, there’s a Space Cadet Gallery full of story-related sculpture installations, interactive music consoles, soundtrack cassette jukeboxes and original artwork from the book that you can explore.

“Space Cadet” is Koala’s second graphic novel. If you like the idea of a charming story of an adventurous space cadet and her guardian robot that touches on the relationship between technology and isolation, the idea of connectivity through family and the cycles that build generations, you should definitely go to this show and pick up the 132-page graphic novel—it’s drawn entirely on etchboards and is accompanied by a “still picture score” composed and recorded by Koala.
