I just came across Soso this morning. I don't know what is going on in the Scandinavian/Noric/Swedish regions of Europe, but seems like they have been non-stop with quality releases since late 2011. Prins Thomas, Todd Terje, Lindstrom, Theresa Andersson and now Soso. It’s a change from the usual spacey disco that’s prone to the region and much more in your face.
This is a cover of Cody Chestnutt’s “My Women, MY Guitars,” and an ode to hopeful pointlessness, with lyrics like “wishing something good could go wrong”. Soso’s sultry, seductive, and vicious vocals thrash perfectly with the band Kriget’s instrumentation, creating a raw basement sound, in the post-punk pre-grunge era.
I'm going to avoid any Winehouse/Allen/Knowles comparisons, because while Soso seems to hang with those heavyweights, she still has the fresh, innovative drive that the more experienced artists have lost. Take a listen to her other tracks to see: http://soundcloud.com/youcancallmesoso.
