Oh April, you’re a tiring month. The weekends of Coachella have passed and LA’s mid-week party schedule has settled down a little bit, allowing a few much-needed days of rest and relaxation before getting back to the grind. One thing that always follows this annual week of fun in April is one of my favorite things in the whole wide world: summer. We tend to get an early start to summer around here (read Los Angeles) and the pool parties are starting to creep in. So on the topic of warmer days spent with no shoes and shirts, here are my mixtape selections most fit for a day chilling in the sun. Grab a drink and hit the pool.

Pools “Return to Paradise Vol.2”

Pools is the collaboration of local heroes (thee) Mike B and DJ Morse Code. What else do I need to say now? These guys obviously know good music in all ends of the spectrum, and their second installment of their mixtape series is bound to be on repeat all summer. This mix features a smooth, slow selection of new jams, old favorites and upcoming Pools productions.

Rocco Raimundo “Ridin With Rocco #3”

All the way from Australia is the third chapter of mixes from Rocco Raimundo. It’s already been summer down there for the last few months, so you can really feel the heat in this one. If slower deep disco edits are your thing, you’ll be all over this. And if not, you’ll still probably love it. The mix features tracks from the likes of Mario Basanov, Benoit & Sergio, 6th Borough Project, and more, and is best served at sunset with your feet in the water.

Surf Ambassador Hendo “The SAHga Chapter 1”

Alright, here’s a slice of tropical heaven courtesy of local froth-lord, Surf Ambassador Hendo. Not only is he one of the most tasteful of local DJ friends, but can also write a damn solid story on his apparent birth. Seriously, read that description on Soundcloud and tell me it doesn’t blow your mind. Anyway, the mix includes tunes from guys like Moon Boots, Slow Hands, Toro Y Moi, The Magician and more. Perfect for beach drinks after a day shredding the waves.

Weekend Express “Wolf Music Mix”

Weekend Express has been one of my favorite emerging talents for the last little while now, and he just put together this energetic mix for Wolf Music Records. The few mixes I posted above are pretty daytime oriented, but make sure you save this one for the nighttime hours. I know quality house music might be hard to stumble upon these days, but fear not as there’s a whole hour full of it right here. Weekend Express’s mix is made up of iconic classics and refreshing new house tunes from the best in the business, including Sound Stream, Medlar, Pop & Eye, Danny Wang, and many others.

El_Txef_A “Mix for IDmagazine”

One of my friends recently turned me onto this guy called El_Txef_A and I’m very pleased with what I’ve been hearing. The only description about him is “Churning out mind scattering, deep house sound constellations El_Txef_A is inspired by depression and does not listen to electronic music, his music is unconventionally incredible.” I know it sounds a bit out there, but trust me as this mix is flawless with musical diversity, yet maintains a wonderful vibe throughout. Eclectic taste is something that should always be appreciated, and this mellow mix has something for everyone even if you’re not a record nerd. I’m not going to spoil the magic of this one, but you’ll definitely recognize at least a few of the tracks.
