We’ve seen the #FoodDJ’s trend blow up (Pësto is still my favorite) and we’ve seen the war of attrition on Twitter between Madonna and deadmau5, but now the two have been combined.

Starting on March 27 on his Twitter feed, old-school house legend DJ Sneak got into a Twitter exchange with old-school house legend counterpart Junior Sanchez about the “fake ass DJs” at WMC. Here’s one of the ones that began it all:

Sneak’s reply was simply “medium” before it escalated into several variations of “Swedish Fish Mafia,” “fish sticks” and talk of  sushi (?). Clearly some inside jokes here, but as soon as the above image hit the web, it was enough to garner some wider attention:

Sneak decided to escalate and post a video of himself, making a comparison to the now infamous video of Steve Angello mixing without headphones on what was purported to be either a pre-gridded, pre-everything set of tracks, or even more salacious, a pre-recorded mix:

Sneak was quick to point out that this wasn’t the first time someone spoke out against SHM, referencing a pretty heavy diss by way of Crosstown Rebels’ Art Department.

Eventually, Mr. Angello himself got wind of what was going down:

Sneak offered two replies:

What ensued was an exchange between Sneak and Angello about “real” DJing and “real” house music, with each receiving support from their respective followers. Sneak made it clear that he doesn’t “hate Smafia,” but he also doesn’t “respect them for their lack of respect for doing all the fake performing.” Meanwhile, Angello actually offered some reverence, calling Sneak a “legend” when wondering why he had to air out this type of dirty laundry in public.

But at its roots, this is the ever-growing debate about “real” house music vs. EDM. All of Sneak’s fans from his 25 years of DJing (about 9K Twitter followers) came to the defense of “real” house music while the Angello fans (250K Twitter followers) pointed out that SHM is global and Sneak’s prominence is minuscule comparatively.

Call it growing pains for dance music in general. Call it a debate that will never be settled. The best part to us is that 9K vs. 250K is immaterial in the world of social media. Regardless of who you like, we all were able to bear witness to the conversation as it unfolded and have our own resulting sidebars.

My $0.02: I’ve been a fan of DJ Sneak for a decade and have never once liked anything Swedish House Mafia has ever put out (and likely never will). But the one thing I do detest is people who deny the relative nature of music fandom. One man’s Sneak is another man’s SHM, and vice versa. I’m all for letting everyone know why you don’t like a certain genre or artist, but qualify it with your own taste without condemning it as globally horrendous. Someone out there likes it and try as you might, you can never take that away from them.

As much as it pains some people to hear this, whether it’s in the whole commercial vs. non-commercial debate, vinyl vs. digital systems, controllers vs. turntables, dubstep vs. techno…if you make people dance with music that you play back to back to back somehow, you’re DJing.

Now if you get paid $25,000 to play a pre-recorded mix for two hours while throwing your hands up in the air, that’s another story. And another can of worms. Maybe you’d care to open that one in the comment section, but for now, we’re signing off.

Thanks for keeping me updated on the DJ drama….growing pains for sure.

Where is the proof that SHM re-records? Because, yes, performing live, ala ‘Justice’ is a f**king sham and should be exposed. However, don’t hate me if I need evidence to believe slander.

Sneak is an old school legend, but there are many new school legends, and I hope most of them aren’t faking it when they ‘spin’ their sets.

This is the video most people cite when talking about him “faking” DJing. Clearly not using headphones, basically just flipping faders up. It’s not evidence of an entirely pre-recorded set (and I was careful to never make that claim), but there is clearly FAR less effort happening here than most DJ sets. 100% no beatmatching of any kind.

Well, thats 1/2 for sure. Bad DJ, bad. Who has the rolled up newspaper?

I saw SHM up close in 2009 and the show looked nothing that. They should tour with DJ Bl3nd now  :D

That being said, I dont care about being able to ride a beatmatch. In fact, I rarely need my headphones, however there is no signs eqing or filtering or layering. Where are the bass cuts, the gates or repeats or phases. That is where I get irked watching this.

On the CDJs you see the “queue” button flashing during the long video and maybe even this (didnt watch the video you posted but remember seeing one when the whole ordeal first broke out a while ago). It couldnt have been a pre-recorded mix because for the light to be flashing, Angello would have had needed to have just queued a song and have it ready to be played for it to be flashing and if the entire mix was pre-recorded, that would be impossible.
        Just my thoughts

  • Bleh

All I know is that on facebook I see my rich spoiled toolbag banker acquaintances getting all excited about SHM; lame.

  • Groovez

SHM is a joke. What are three guys up there in front of 4 decks really doing? Hitting play. John Digweed and Paul Kalkbrenner are real DJ’s.

    • Me

Paul Kalkbrenner is not a DJ. He’s a live performer.

  • smh @ shm

who was the 3rd artist named in daft punk’s “teachers”?  just checking…

    • Crookers

      YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not sure if anyone read about the Angello controversy surrounding that video, but his defense was that this was only a “30-minute portion of the set that was synced with pyro and effects, something that happens at most massive festivals.” He then went on to discuss the fact that he hasn’t used headphones in a long time, mainly because he a) knows the tunes he plays well b) one can calculate the pitch difference between songs visually. I don’t support this, but we can all be sure that this will be a constant emerging conflict between “old-school” DJs and those being carried by increasing technology. Look at Zedd and Porter, both use Traktor with S4s and neither usually use headphones. But, they can surely play a killer set. Two sides, positive and negative. Will there be a true “winner”?

Good article. I think you nailed the key issue in the last two sections.

On another note, When the Lakers won the championship in 2009-10, Steve Angello tweeted during one of the games that if the Lakers won, he would throw a FREE party in LA to celebrate (his new “Hometown”…. barf)

It is now 2012 and there has never been any free party to speak of, I even hit him up on twitter about it, he acknowledged the tweet & promise and said “Stay tuned”…again this was over 2 years ago.

Now his brother (AN21) is a DJ too?

Please God make all this fake & blatantly obvious “House Music” go away so the rest of us can enjoy what we fell in love with 15 years ago.

  • Iheartbigmen

DJing is fucking lame! DJ Sneak needs to stop talking shit, obviously people could careless what he thinks, and wanting everything to go back the way it was 15 years ago, fuck off!  thats the most dumb thing I have ever heard! its people like you that stop music from progressing into a new generation… Im a new age house artist, im not famous yet, but all this shit talking about what real djing… like wtf DJing is the lamest fucking thing ever… yeah put a track down let it spin a little, sample here and there.. yeah. hey DJ FATASS(sneak) when you learn how to actually perform like a real musician and not some DJ, then talk shit! fat ass

What we have to look at is human nature. We are always trying to make more money these days for doing less work – and this is what every art known to man has come to – look at Renaissance Art and compare it to most of today’s, not nearly the shear talent has been mastered like those artists before us. We all evolve, and house music and EDM as a whole has had it’s fair share of ups and downs, with sellouts making music for companies or for big name artists, changing their basis of production to something far less entertaining or “real”. Angello might have played a partially pre-recorded mix or whatever, DJs do it simply because they can. A contract doesn’t state whether or not he can pre-record, and who the FUCK cares if it is – it takes the same amount of talent to pre-record than the live mix, unless of course you listen to it over and over. The crowd won’t give a flying shit if it’s prerecorded or not since 90% of the crowd is on Ex, is drunk or high. People who go to shows are just looking for a good time.

  • Hhhhhhh

Need to clarify something here. SHM get above USD 500 000,- for the best paying gig´s:) GO SHM!!

    1) “Now if you get paid $25,000 to play a pre-recorded mix for two hours while throwing your hands up in the air, that’s another story. And another can of worms. Maybe you’d care to open that one in the comment section, but for now, we’re signing off.” SHM mixes live and thats a fact. I’m not sure why you’d insinuate that.
    2) I love 2/3 of SHM–Axwell and Seb. Class acts and not to mention they make great tunes. Axwell is also a great DJ on his own.
    3) I do agree, Steve Angello is the scum of DJing/Producing. His tunes suck and he barely DJs. Just presses play and plays the tracks out. Nothing special. Not to mention, he’s a fatass asshole.
    4) I think this guy is wrong, SHM is house. The genre has a evolved and house isn’t just funky techno type stuff anymore for the most part. Big room synths and the like are more standard of genre today. (For the record, I love both. SHM has some great tracks and 2/3 make great songs on their own. DJ Sneak is also a legend of Chicago house and you can’t touch his rep).
    5) In my opinion, they’re both acting like children. This is all very immature. Make music, play shows and don’t worry about what the other guy is doing. DJ Sneak comes off as very jealous.
