Florian Meindl stays busy. In addition to scoring films and advertisements, writing for audio production magazines and creating endless sound banks for sample libraries, the 24-year-old Austrian runs Flash Recordings and produces stand out tech house. Jack of all trades, Master of None? Apparently the adage doesn't hold true here.
“What is Techno” is a funky groover with superb production—smooth and round and big everything. Though it isn't necessarily the most courageously innovative track, it feels and sounds excellent and would easily fit in a tasteful house or techno set. The remix from Shadow Dancer (Boysnoize Records veterans) is a bit more dark and aggressive, emphasis on growling acidy baselines and stiff snare rolls.
The flip, “Good Times” is also delightful, a really useful track encouraging the listener to “let the good times roll, roll, roll” (layers of pitched-down masculine insistence). A rich DJ tool with great percussion sounds and metallic stabs building into a pumping crescendo. Club hits, surely.
