A 10-film series dedicated to the legendary German band, Tangerine Dreams
A deserved revival of interest in German kosmiche musik has reached new heights lately, with a BBC documentary on the genre in 2009, Neu! reissues, the emergence of previously unreleased Can material, and most recently, an eight-night Kraftwerk show at MoMA. In this climate, the influence of Tangerine Dream on today’s music scene cannot be understated. The pulsating drive of the group’s work has undoubtedly reached a broad range of musicians, including Detroit Techno acts like Juan Atkins (Model 500), UK electronic acts like The Orb, Underworld, and Orbital, and contemporary electronic artists like Emeralds, Caribou, and the Chromatics. For film buffs, it is time to reclaim the synthesizer score as the sound of the 80s, and to rediscover Tangerine Dream’s prodigious soundtrack output as the high point of the cinema’s ambient moment.
The showcase is being presents by BAMcinématek on June 1 —7 and includes the North American premiere of Philippe Garrel’s Le berceau de cristal, music by Ash Ra Tempel (Manuel Gottsching) starring Nico and Anita Pallenberg.
Over 40 years and a lot more albums, Tangerine Dream composed more than 30 film scores, starting in 1977 with William Friedkin’s Sorcerer. To celebrate the group’s US tour this July, BAMcinématek presents a week-long series of films featuring Tangerine Dream’s cosmic, ethereal, moving, and often contrapuntal scores, from 1981’s Thief, by Michael Mann, to 1988’s Reagan-era apocalypse vision Miracle Mile, by Steve De Jarnatt.
As a special bonus, the series features three films scored with what Tangerine Dream founder Edgar Froese dubbed kosmiche musik, including the North American premiere of Philippe Garrel’s Le berceau de cristal (The Crystal Cradle, 1975—Jun 6), with music by Ash Ra Tempel, and Douglas Trumbull’s cult sci-fi debut, Silent Running (1972—Jun 7), an inspiration for Klaus Schulze of Ash Ra Tempel and Tangerine Dream. Silent Running will screen with the short that partially influenced it, Rolf Forsberg’s Ark (1970).
