Could Gary Richards and Holy Ship!! have started a new trend, festivals by sea? Well Paul Tollett (Goldenvoice President) has decided to give it a go with Coachella. The S.S. Coachella will embark on two voyages in December, a three-day trip going to the Bahamas and a four-day version hitting Jamaica. The ship even has grass. Like the stuff you sit on, you'll probably have to bring the stoner “Jamaican” variety yourself.
Considering how popular dance music is right now, how packed the Sahara tent has been since Daft Punk blew it up, it's a little surprising that things aren't a little more focused on the genre. Not that the lineup is bad. Pulp, Hot Chip, Yeasayer, Girl Talk, James Murphy and Sleigh Bells are great names to see on the bill, but Bob Lefsetz (you should subscribe to his daily email, btw) was pretty astute when he said:
Personally, I believe they’re missing a giant opportunity, they should have made it the Sahara Tent At Sea. The time to capitalize on electronic music is now, no one knows the future, this is what kids want to do. Go to sea, get high and dance.
I can't imagine there's many of your reading Magnetic that doesn't concur with the man—I'd enjoy going to sea, getting high and dancing. You?
