Ambient music may not be your EDM culture answer all the time, but when it’s right it’s right. Have you heard of British band Marconi Union? “Pure aural bliss” is what they do and they do it so damn well that scientists have actually dubbed it the most relaxing tune in the history of man. No really, apparently the song was played to 40 women and they all found it more coma inducing than the sleepiest of sleepyheads, Enya, Mozart and Coldplay. The song relaxes thy self by way of a 60 BPM rhythm and specific tones and frequencies and the intervals in which they’re utilized. The combination of it all actually causes the brainwaves and heart rate to synchronize with the rhythm. Even Time Magazine placed “Weightless” at no 11 in their Top 50 Inventions of 2011. That’s pretty awesome.

The top 10 most relaxing tunes were:

1. Marconi Union “Weightless”
2. Airstream “Electra
3. DJ Shah “Mellomaniac” (Chill Out Mix)
4. Enya “Watermark
5. Coldplay “Strawberry Swing
6. Barcelona “Please Don’t Go
7. All Saints “Pure Shores
8. Adele “Someone Like You
9. Mozart “Canzonetta Sull’aria
10. Cafe Del Mar “We Can Fly

And here are some songs I’ve strapped on a pair of headphones to (some ambient, some less so) in hopes of chilling the fuck out. They all seem to work just fine for me.

Massive Attack “Teardrop
Zero 7 “In The Waiting Line
Talvin Singh “Traveller
The Beach Boys “Diamond Head
Télépopmusik “Breathe
The Orb “Little Fluffy Clouds
Orbital “Halcyon On and On
Boards of Canada “Amo Bishop Roden
Sofa Surfers “Sofa Rock
Sven Vath “Harlequin Plays Bells” (Alter Ego Mix)
