As we predicted, Armin van Buuren took top honors in this year’s top 100 DJ poll sponsored by DJ Magazine, with Tiesto, Avicii, David Guetta and deadmau5 rounding out the top 5. The rest of the top 10 included Hardwell, Dash Berlin, Above and Beyond, Afrojack and Skrillex.
Perhaps an ode to the changing EDM scene, former winner Sasha failed to crack the top 100 (coming in at 103). Paul Oakenfold, another previous winner, placed in the bottom half of the list at number 69. Other DJs who surprisingly failed to break the 100 threshold included Fatboy Slim, Diplo, Bassnectar and Dillon Francis.
The highest new entry was Nicky Romero at an impressive number 17. Viral sensation Madeon also entered at number 54 and Knife Party at number 33. Benny Benassi fell 43 spots to number 70, and Daftpunk placed 44 without playing any shows.
Last year’s poll had an interesting turn of events when Armin Van Buuren was ousted by David Guetta as the top DJ after winning four years in a row, and this year’s poll has garnered the usual flak from critics. For the first time ever, Facebook was used as one of the voting mediums, prompting many to say that the most popular, and not the most talented, DJs had better chances of winning. Kaskade likened winning the poll to being crowned prom king or homecoming queen, and its no secret that powerhouse marketing and social media have played a huge roll in the results of the poll. At the same time, with hundreds of thousands of votes cast, it’s hard to say the poll isn’t influential.
Whether it’s how because of how many people like a DJs Facebook page, or how many people they’ve touched with their music, or somewhere in between, the results stand as they are. All we can say is congratulations to Armin van Buuren for winning, clearly you’re doing something right.
While waiting for the results to come out, we scanned the twittersphere for some of the best tweets about the top 100 poll. Here’s a sampling of some of our favorites:

Ahhh @DILLONFRANCIS, you just missed the #Top100DJs at 109th. Must improve Twitter skills and jokes in 2013.

Hey, @ParisHilton how do you think you’re gunna place in this years #DJMag Top 100 DJ’s?
DJ Mag re-tweted:
It’s a shame the people over at FB can’t realize that @DJmag only counts the votes.. Sigh. Looking forward to see the winner tonight though!
Ben Nicky @bennicky

Guy Andrews @Guy_Andrews
Ok so Sasha didn’t even make the top 100 on the DJ Mag poll. I’m now predicting DJ Pauly D as #1.
Lindsay Jacobsen @lajacob
Avoiding #ADE. I don’t need @top100djs to tell me @arminvanbuuren is the greatest DJ in the world. I’ve always known. In my heart forever.
