I have to say that it is hard to envision a rebel, let’s say James Dean, playing a conservative game of chance invented in 1929, which to this very day is still a popular favorite played by millions of “blue haired” senior citizens across this nation…ok. That’s not entirely accurate. Bingo is something that everyone has played at some point. It is not a game but more of a tradition of sorts. There are Bingo events where you can win amazing big money prizes and other games where you get a week’s worth of Depend underwear, regardless of the prize or the age group at play… Bingo has stood the test of time and continues to be enjoyed by the conservative masses… Until now…

It’s always a good thing to get a “come out and play” message from my homie Oriel, informing me that me and the ole lady were guest-listed for a sold out “experience” at Dragonfly on Santa Monica Blvd.

Back to James Dean…the original “rebel without a cause” maybe he was the wrong “rebel” to use in my initial analogy because quite honestly, once we stepped foot inside the rambunctiously loud venue it was like members from the 1979 movie The Warriors came up and punched the rebel icon in the face.

The room was vigorously alive with droves of people of any and all types. It was hard to decipher what kind of party we were at…was this a fuzzy boot, glow stick twirling, pacifier sucking rave or was it a hipster vs. biker vs. suits vs. nerds vs. hot college girls and guys tossed salad of sorts? I couldn’t tell and honestly I didn’t care. The energy was ELECTRIC and the people fueling it all were all there for one reason… B.I.N.G.O.

Ominously on the massive stage screen were the words:

Welcome To Rebel Bingo—What you’re experiencing now is the calm before the storm.

Our evening's musical purveyor (Jarrett) continued to  deliver an eclectic blend of "make you move" selections as the impatient room continued to pack to the gills like bingo sardines in a Dragonfly can…and finally the 10 minute mark hit and the screen changed to an ominous clock ticking down with the words “Shit Gets Real In” above it.

Anticipation set in…Would I need to text someone my last will and testament? Should I call my mother and tell her that I love her?

The clock zeroed out and onto the stage entered our British host of the night, Freddie Fortune, with a brief introduction of how one drunken night in the basement of a London church hall gave way to the accidental birth of “Rebel Bingo” that had come to pass…

And with its birth, a global revolution rose against a tired old pastime. Then suddenly the screen lit up with the image of an all American apple pie baking grandma. But looks are deceiving as we quickly learned that this was one of the enemies of Rebel Bingo as our host gingerly began to read an actual letter from a pissed off Bingo organizer.

You are bringing down the good image of Bingo and if you do not cease, I will be forced to take drastic measures. I have a lot of friends in high places…

Blah blah blah…BLOW IT OUT YOUR GRANNIE PANTIES!!!

With various boos from the crowd, our host began to scream into the mic: “Fight the power!!!” as we all cheered maniacally like we were standing on the front-lines with William Wallace of Scotland about to do battle…and so our leader continued (with uplifting classical revolution symphonies playing on the loudspeakers)…

It’s time to stand up and break free from the shackles that hold us down…
It’s not just a game anymore…
We’re taking over the world…

Then boom! A bass heavy dubstep track slammed down like a crashing wall of noise on the heads of screaming, dancing, jumping minion in unison, mimicking the throttling energy of the Sahara tent at Coachella just past…Coupled with a blindingly amped light show and iconic suggestive imagery on stage, I honestly forgot that I was inside the Dragonfly, a cozy venue with a capacity of only 500, because it felt Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger than any other night that I’ve been to the bar!

And so it began…the rules were simple.

Red Card Round 1

Game 1: Match one complete line of numbers, run onto the stage and hug the host…um…
That’s right! Hug the host!
The first 2 winners would then have to battle it out to win the grand prize… a giant stuffed panda, which was comically pitched as a prize that would cure your loneliness…

Game 2: Match two complete lines of numbers, run onto the stage and hug the host…

After a 20 minute "let’s-get-more-wasted-at-the-bar intermission," Round 2 of Rebel Bingo began…

Round 2 was a repeat of Round 1 but with the Green Card and this time with bigger and better prizes…and while I’d love to go into further detail of the wonderment that continued, I’d much rather urge you go to the next bingo rebellion and join the revolution…it’s definitely a cause worth BINGO'ing for!
