Here are my picks for 10 songs from 2013 that have been rocking dance floors worldwide.
1. I NEED YOU TONIGHT (DJ SOO REMIX), PUNKIN MACHINE
This is one of my favorite tunes / remixes from 2013. It is an absolute club banger. It can totally flip the direction of a partyand get everyone on the dance floor jamming. It is pretty much in every one of my dj sets, and will continue to be into the future. An instant classic.
2. BRAND NEW feat KATIE MOWGLI, PUMPKIN
A stunning cover by up and coming West Coast dj/producer Pumpkin featuring the vocal stylings of Katie Mowgli of the Mowglis. The song was originally sung by Melanie Safka. Pumpkin’s version with Katie is magical. Keep an ear open for this kid. He is going places!
3. GETTIN’ LIVE, GRiZ
I have watched this kid grow so large over the last two years. He is incredibly talented, and deserves everything. He recently sold out DC’s legendary 9:30 Club. Watching him perform this song live in front of over 1,200 people was amazing. It is serious future Funk!
4. REAL STEEL, SEE-I
The brothers Steele aka Rootz and Zeebo are cranking on a new album. This is the first song from the upcoming album. It just dropped in December, but is definitely making the Best of 2013 list. This is funky electronic reggae at its best! It will definitely put a smile on your face!
5. STOP GOOGLING ME! featuring MARCELLA PUPPINI (JAMES COPELAND REMIX), BART&BAKER
The French Electro Swing innovators BART&BAKER are unstoppable. There music is stunning, and there is so much of it. I highly advise everyone to get familiar with their catalog. This amazing remix by James Copeland is a serious tune that fits into any mid tempo set. The lyrics by Marcella Puppini are beautiful and hilarious at the same time! Check this one out!
6. RUMBA STYLE featuring RAYNA, SKEEWIFF
Skeewiff is definitely an active legend in the Future Funk / Neo World scene. They have been an inspiration to a lot of us. Their music covers all styles and genres perfectly. The songs are filled with live instrumentation, and vocals. For over 15 years Skeewiff has been making amazing music. It does not look like they are slowing down anytime soon.
7. STAND UP (2013 Mix), FORT KNOX FIVE
A little plug for one of our tunes from 2013. We originally started making this for the film STAND UP GUYS. After it premiered in the film, we decided to make it into a proper song for our 10 Years of Fort Knox Five compilation. It is our most recent piece of original music. The trumpet was recorded in my living room. It is definitely a tune for the ladies!
8. BASSOUE, UPROOT ANDY
Uproot Andy is definitely on my list current favorite djs. The kid has mad skillz. He also makes some of the phattest remixes and edits out there. Bassoue is from his Worldwide Ting Vol 2 compilation. It is the epitome of funky world music. Pretty much every song he puts out is a heater. We have featured lots of his tunes on our Funk The World mix series. Hopefully we can get him to mix a Funk The World session for us.
9. NO MORE GUNS featuring TENOR FLY, MR BENN
Sick reggae dancehall jam from Mr Benn featuring the legendary Tenor Fly. This jam dropped on Nice Up! Records. Definitely check out the remixes as well. The Yes King Remix is excellent! Mr Benn along with Shepdog, See-I, Wrongtom, Dub Pistols, and Dreadsquad are running the modern reggae dancehall scenes!
10. HIDE featuring AYNZLI JONES (A.SKILLZ REMIX), N.A.S.A.
A seriously blazing remix by one of the kings of Future Funk and Breaks. This remix has slayed dance floors at awesome music festivals like Shambhala, The Bounce, and Bass Coast. A.Skillz is in top form on this jam! Find this and throw it in your crate or on your iPod!
