With highs of 90 degrees this past weekend and some unforgettable Sunday sessions spent basking in beats and California sunshine, I’m left with a smile on my freckled face and it will remain there. Why? Well generally I’m a pretty happy person, but the ever-changing and always enchanting cast of musical characters here in L.A definitely aids in my sunny disposition. So tune in,turn on and chill out.
Here’s what I’ve detected on my tunes radar this week...
THURSDAY MARCH 20
THE VIRGIL. SILVERLAKE
Funky, fresh and in your hemisphere…
Institution for vinyl loving Angelino’s with funky tendencies: FUNKMOSPHERE is here once again at the local silverlake watering hole the Virgil.
The founder and Stones Throw recording artist Dam-Funk dropped some knowledge on Magnetic in regards to this super dope and legendary affair;
“Funkmosphere, 8 years strong. Catering to L.A, Southern California & worldwide; Funk, boogie, post-disco & modern funk aficionados. Founded in 2006, the collective grew to include the family of respected wax diggers & DJ’s known as: Billy Goods, Laroj, DJ Randy watson AKA Ron, Matt Respect & Eddie Funkster. This crew continues to provide L.A’s vibrant night life with music that grooves and induces “movement” and not just “head -nods”. Goes down every Thursday night. All wax and live performances, by a who’s who in classic & new funk based artist from the worldwide scene.
Funkosphere alive and well.”
This Thursday they are proud to have friends and family at CHIT CHAT Records: Tony Adams, Daniel T & Casual touch for a night of funk, boogie and heavy disco edits. They're bringing copies of the new Chit Chat record which you can listen to here:

MARIO COTTO & TRES DUBOIS/ODYSSEY

Guilty of a good time, by ASSOCIATION...
If you are keen on Left-field, post-punk, cosmic, italo, boogie, no-wave, disco & more, all night then you have come to the right place. Odyssey takes you on a trippy musical voyage into the beyond.
The high party priestess and lady behind it all Courtney Fruitfly Nichols added this;
“'There is no better feeling that dancing to disco on carpet on a weeknight. Quickly becoming downtown's raunchiest secret, this weekly, vinyl-oriented event is all about the stiff drinks, risqué tunes and frisky girls.'
Well those last 3 things she listed are all fine with me. Cheers Courtney!
And if it could get any better, there’s NO cover.
Hosted by the lovely Courtney Fruit Fly Nichols (FruitFlyLife)
And on the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th day God said: let there be disco.

FRIDAY MARCH 21 & SATURDAY MARCH 22
LIGHTS DOWN LOW WEEKENDER LA TAKEOVER!!
TBD. LOS ANGELES
The LDL crew , Lights down low of course, are spreading their love for raging with L.A once again, fresh from Austin’s SXSW they are back welcoming Julio Bashmore & friends on Friday and then Tensnake with a gaggle of other heavy weights on Saturday. Too much goodness right here.
Corey AKA Sleazemore, the founder and one of the main muscles flexing for LDL (alongside his partner in crimes Richie Panic) gave this statement;
“LDL March 2014 Weekender. This Friday and Saturday Lights Down Low presents an
underground weekender of epic proportions with Tensnake, Julio Bashmore, Waze & Odyssey and more. We just made it back from SXSW and there’s no slowing down.
This weekend your leisure is our pleasure in this very special edition of March madness!
We are taking over for the whole weekend and transforming a typical slice of L.A wasteland warehouse into a spectacular venue where we can all gather together, raise our hands, and party. Party BIG. Find us Friday night getting weird with one of our fave producers of the past few years, Julio Bashmore. The badman from Bristol always brings the noise and we can’t wait to see what he’s got up his sleeves. Bonus Beats! They said it couldn’t be done, and some have said that it shouldn’t be done, but we have reunited LA underground legends Acid Girls for a very special one off set.
Saturday night pick your outfit up off the ground, throw on some perfume and head back to the land of debauched disco madness, because Tensnake is back and playing an extended set in celebration of his excellent new LP GLOW (just dropped this week). Plus Waze & Odyssey return to grace the decks, last time they played LDL was one of the craziest night on record with sweat dripping from walls so we are going to be prepared this time. It’s going to be a great weekend with lots of friends, awesome music and a hedonistic pleasure palace built just for you.
Come spend the weekend with us. We’ll show you a great time.”
Talk about tempting us with a good time?!
Sounds like the best kind of trouble.
