If you're a regular in the California house music scene, hopefully you've had a chance to experience a Lights Down Low event. If not, well then, change that as soon as possible. LDL Founders and Resident LDL DJs Corey Sleazemore and Richie Panic are putting on some of the best parties around in San Francisco and Los Angeles with elite talent, great vibes, and shows that are only getting better. Fresh off a successful LDL event at SXSW and also a great underground DJ Hell show in an abandoned church, we got a chance to ask a few questions of the dynamic duo behind Lights Down Low and get some insight on what it takes to put on some of the best parties in California.

SO HOW DID YOU BECOME THE AMAZING PROMOTERS THAT YOU ARE TODAY?

By coming together and using our assets and knowledge to enhance and enchant the general public thru music, lights, substances, and intoxicating spectacle. The knowledge and passion of the good time and the never ending quest to find what works and then take that and make it into a huge shared experience that everyone can savor.

WHERE DID THE EVENT NAME LIGHTS DOWN LOW COME FROM?

Someone had said “Let’s make a place everyone will want to go.” This was overheard incorrectly as “Let’s make a place everyone will Lights Down Low.” This hilarious drugged out misheard seemed soooooo hilarious at the time and now here we are many years later. Turning shit up, and turning the Lights Down Low.

HOW DO YOU CHOOSE YOUR BOOKINGS? ANY SPECIFIC CRITERIA OR PHILOSOPHY THAT GUIDES YOU?

Our own playlists as DJs. Our interest in the musical world around us. Meeting new and interesting people and seeing what they do. Admiring Kevin Saunderson as young men and now Kevin Saunderson is having lunch with us.

WHAT DIDN'T YOU EXPECT ABOUT BEING A PROMOTER?

Always expect the unexpected.

WHAT IS THE MOST BIZARRE/WEIRD/FUNNY THING AS A PROMOTER YOU'VE HAD TO DEAL WITH?

A certain unnamed luminary of the DJ scene became trapped into what is known as a K-hole while inside of a luxury hotel room. They were phoning us from inside very uncertain of their reality and not only was it check out time but a plane was waiting to take them to what they call “a very big festival” and the mgmt had to come and open the door and we had to manage them all the way as far as we could to the boarding process and keep our fingers crossed they got on the plane.

WHAT ARE SOME MUST DO'S OF PROMOTING?

Keep the yelling to the minimum. Be polite to everyone. Have a lot of excitement and a very high Klout score.

WHAT ARE SOME DEFINITE DON'TS OF PROMOTING?

Avoid shady men in weird clothes offering you candy or women.

WHAT IS IT LIKE TO PROMOTE IN LA VS SF?

They are both fantastic places with so many people with love in their hearts and dancing in their feet. I think we both spend so much time traveling back and forth that they have become one. That being said in LA people have slightly more enthusiasm for the glamour of nightlife.

HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THE UNDERGROUND SCENE RIGHT NOW?

Always keep going underground. The darker the better. The louder the better. Lose the day and take the night.

HOW HARD WAS IT TO GET AN ABANDONED CHURCH AS THE VENUE FOR THE DJ HELL SHOW IN LA RECENTLY?

The party gods work in mysterious ways, but then again, where else are you going to put DJ Hell? It had to be on the alter.

HOW DO YOU FIND THE TIME TO BOTH DJ AND PROMOTE? DO THEY LEND THEMSELVES TO STRENGTHEN AND EMPOWER EACH OTHER, OR ARE YOU CONSTANTLY DIVIDED AND JUGGLING?

We are always inspired and invigorated by all of it. We have made lifelong friends with some of the most talented and aware people in the business. We are pleasure seekers by nature and we want to share that pleasure any way we can. By bringing in amazing talent to beguile you in ways you have never seen or by playing the songs (old and new) that we think the people have a right to hear. To feel good. That being said, there is not enough minutes in the day. We want longer days AND nights.

ANYTHING BIG IN THE WORKS IN TERMS OF YOUR OWN DJ CAREERS YOU'D LIKE TO SHARE?

We are curating an event in the South by Southwest. We are doing 4 parties in 2 nights in both SF and LA and working on a Coachella party. We are playing and slaying where ever we are required.

WHAT ALBUMS HAVE YOU BEEN LISTENING TO LATELY?

Richie-Tranquil Moods:The Ultimate New Age Collection (Box Set)
Richie-Schoolboy Q-Oxymoron
Corey - Wild Beasts - Present Tense
Corey - Tears for Fears - Songs from the Big Chair

ANY HUGE LDL PLANS FOR 2014 YOU MIGHT BE ABLE TO SHARE?

If we told you we would have to kill you. Just keep your eyes peeled. Go to the facebooks, the googles, and the actual streets. We are out there. Doing it just for you. Increase the peace.
