New To EDM Culture? Here Are 40 Tips From A Seasoned Veteran

New To EDM Culture? Here Are 40 Tips From A Seasoned Veteran
There are a lot of “tips” and “do’s and don’ts” for EDM culture, but the one below (published on reddit  by redditor dropEleven) has got to be the most accurate we can find.

It comes complete with breakdowns on what progressive house music really is, what gloving means to the scene, and more importantly, what David Guetta means to the scene.

MAGNETIC RECOMMENDS: How To Tell If You’re A Basic Bitch

So if you’re just getting into EDM, here are some important tips from a vet.

  • raves used to be better
  • like, you don’t even know
  • big room house is terrible
  • no, that’s progressive house
  • no, that’s progressive trance
  • no, that’s electro-house-dark-psy-trance-moobahtron-trap with raggacore cybergrind elements, you fucking idiot
  • your misappropriating that impossibly specific sub genre is physically offensive to me on a cellular level
  • tiesto is a sellout
  • david guetta is a sellout
  • hardwell is a sellout
  • eric prydz is a sell out
  • pryda is a sell out
  • you didn’t know they were the same person? (scoffs) okay…
  • afrojack is a sell out
  • hardwell is a sellout
  • nicky romero is a sellout
  • avicci is a sellout
  • martin garrix is literally hitler
  • armin van buuren is okay
  • no, on second thought, fuck that. armin is a sellout
  • you’re probably a sell out too
  • everyone is a sellout
  • except deadmau5, who is king of king and i can laugh at all of it because i get all of his inside jokes
  • it’s okay for us to dress like this, but look at you, you skanky slut
  • it’s better to go to a festival and bitch the whole time about how everyone has ruined it rather than try to find your own space to enjoy yourself
  • trance is dead
  • PLUR is dead
  • god is dead too
  • i wish martin garrix was dead
  • selfies are literally the worst thing you can do
  • in fact, everyone taking pictures is awful. why can’t you just enjoy the music the way i enjoy the music?
  • EXCEPTION TO THE RULE: it’s not only okay, but somehow encouraged for 90% of the girls to take 17 of the exact same posed and filtered picture and post it to instagram with a needlessly detailed caption and 23 hashtags begging for people to follow her account
  • seriously, all of you taking pictures and being happy makes me so goddamned mad.
  • i don’t need drugs to enjoy the music, so i’m better than you
  • even though i’m probably on drugs too
  • like enough to put a rhino in a coma
  • if you haven’t been doing this for longer than i have, you just don’t get it and you’re everything that’s wrong with the scene
  • glovers are literally hitler
  • can you imagine if fucking martin garrix gloved?
  • god damn it

Deadmau5 is not a sell out? Are you kidding me? whoever wrote the above is surely having a laugh and joking! Dead-mau-5 is probably the biggest sell-out of them all… a marketing/branding monkey and money chaser – he invented the $100 DJ show and was one of the first to take a residency in Vegas… not a sell out… ok then…

    • http://twitter.com/__heartofagypsy heyyitshannah

Yes. Out of this entire list of facts, we are completely 100% serious about the Mau5. Don’t make fun of him. He might call you out on Twitter.

    • Becca

I think somebody missed the sarcasm train.

    • Baki

Deadmau5 may be making money, but that doesn’t mean he’s a sellout. Being a sellout means turning your back on the fans that made you the producer you are today, and chasing money instead. It means forgetting where you came from, and completely changing your style just to make more money. The Mau5 is no sellout my friend, the Mau5 is the shit.

      • Neil Rushton

Electronic Music may be making money, but that doesn’t mean it’s a sellout (yes it does if you know anything about the history of Electronic Music). Being a sellout means turning your back on the fans (EDM kids from Electronica vets who actually know shit about the music) that made you the music you are today and chasing money instead (EDM big festivals that clueless kids call raves, Steve Aoki and “Superstar” DJ’s, $$$$). It means forgetting where you came from (The fucking 90’s, Electronica, The Underground, Detroit History) and completely changing your style (Electro House, Pop Music wank) to make more money (yep). The Electronic Music is no sellout my friend, but EDM is shit.

As someone who knows the history of this music and has done massive research on it since the 90’s, kids today know jack shit about Electronic music, they know these genres: Electro House, Dubstep/Brostep, and Hardstyle. That’s about it really. Raves were not events sponsored by Red Bull, they were underground parties held in fields and abandoned warehouses. Calling EDM an umbrella term is a joke when the kids don’t listen to any of the other genres out there except for whats BIG at ULTRA this year!!!. We already had Electronica, why change it to stupid EDM, how is Ambient or IDM fucking EDM? Electronica made more sense, it was short for Electronic Music. Kids today want to re-name OUR music when they don’t even KNOW THE FUCKING HISTORY. How many of these EDM kids today are listening to Underground Resistance (pioneers of Techno)? how many KNOW who fucking Juan Atkins is? Who Drexciya were? They know Skrillex and Steve Aoki but they don’t know Derrick May who is a god damn PIONEER. That is one of the major reasons I HATE EDM and LOVE true Electronic Music.

Pop kids think they can just hijack our music that we had for 20 years and rename it and call it their own when truth is they don’t know shit about it or the history behind it. All they know is what they have been spoon fed by websites like this one, YouTube and whatever pop music bullshit they listen to.

I blame the record industry the most, they FUCKED UP in the early 90’s. When Orbital went to #1 in the UK, we had POP and Rap go to #1. So the recording industry NEVER PROMOTED Electronic Music in America, we had RAP RAP RAP while Europe got our Detroit artists (Juan, Derrick, and Kevin) and started to make thier own Electronic Music from Acid House and Detroit Techno sounds. The major labels passed on Electronic Music until the Electronica craze in 1997 when The Prodigy went to #1. Even then Electronica came and went within a few years, though the term stuck with most people and it did finally let people know that this music was out there.

But the problem was you had these know-it-all kids at that time who thought “Electronica” was a term created by the media when in fact it was a term used in the UK starting in the early 90’s, any magazine (Muzik, Mixmag, DJ) proves this as they used the term ALL THE FUCKING TIME!

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve read in forums this bullshit:

“Electronica was a made up term by the media” this is BULLSHIT.
want proof, go read any back issue of Muzik here:

        http://www.muzikmagazine.co.uk/

you might learn something from reading about what actually happened in the 90’s kiddies.

but the know-it-all kids want to say that Electronica was created by the US media when IN FACT the media simply used what the UK were calling it over there but American newbies had NO IDEA because most didn’t have Muzik, Mixmag or DJ because they were imported mags. Now the know-it-all kiddies want to claim people were calling the music EDM since 1995. What BULLSHIT – NOBODY in the 90’s called the music EDM, I don’t care what bullshit Journal that came from. NOBODY called it EDM.

the true reason for EDM is the recording industry FUCKING UP in the 90’s and not supporting Electronic Music like it was being supported in Europe. In Europe anybody could tell you what Trance and Techno were without an umbrella term because it was (and still is) part of the culture. Europeans don’t want to call the music EDM when they had no reason to call it that before.

do some research kiddies, understand the history and you will understand why these new genres like Electro House and Brostep are the biggest JOKE in the history of Electronic Music.

Neil Rushton helped bring Detroit Techno to Europe. Do some research on him. Fucking kids today have no clue.

        • BROshot

          U MAD, BRO?

          • Neil Rushton

typical internet response. Did you even read what I wrote. Tons of true facts there. Try to debate me. I’m schooling everyone of you here with my knowledge. Not mad, just making my points. Seriously, someone try to debate me. Tell me I’m wrong. YOU CAN’T.

          • Baki

No one wants to debate you simply because no one cares. No one cares if you call it Electronica or EDM or Electronic Music. If the music is good, people are happy. I know this might irritate someone that’s really into the scene as yourself, but you’re really taking this way too seriously. How did this discussion even turn into that 8 paragraph rant you went on? Is there something I’m missing?

I know it annoys you when people call it EDM. It used to annoy me. But you know what? It really doesn’t matter. The music is still good. Even though it has evolved into something almost completely different than old school Electronica, I still enjoy it a lot, and I wouldn’t want to change anything about it. I’m still trying to wrap my head around why you even went on that Electronica/EDM rant. Oh, and by the way, if you could please stop calling everyone kids/kiddies, that’d be great. You sound extremely pretentious when you do that.

          • David Sound

Baki, no one cares when you say no one cares. But you obviously do since you replied to his rant. This is the internet. Are you the rant police? To answer your question, yes there is something missing, half your brain. Stop tripping on bath salts that are labeled as Molly. You don’t know shit. Shut the fuck up kiddie.

          • Baki

I specifically said “no one wants to debate you.” I’m not debating with him. I’m just telling him why no one wants to argue with him — no one cares what you call the music, as long as it sounds good. Most people don’t care, at least.

What a typical internet response too.. Insulting my intelligence then telling me to “shut the fuck up.” Real classy, David.

          • David Sound

            Wait. You still talking?

          • Neil Rushton

but that’s the problem, the music is NOT good. It’s redundant as hell, especially Electro House which is like the same song over and over again, with the same overused build up. But it goes nowhere. It has not “EVOLVED” from old school Electronica. Just listen to this stuff, it’s the same DIGITAL sound in EVERY TRACK with the same overused sounds.

I went on my rant because I’m trying to inform those who are actually trying to understand the music. Most people who listen to the new genres of “EDM” like Electro House, Trap, Drumstep, Brostep, these are KIDS.

so I don’t care if you think it’s pretentious. Just go to YouTube and look up Tiesto at ULTRA and tell me how many ADULTS you see in the video.

          • Baki

Ahh well you see dude, what’s “good” and what’s “bad” is entirely subjective. I completely agree about the repetitiveness of certain genres though.

          • yru

You are what the article is making fun of.

        • David Sound

You’re right Neil, but these kids don’t deserve an explanation from you. I appreciate what you said though. The new generation don’t want to learn or be schooled. It’s all about the YOLO. They just take and don’t give anything back.

          • JC

“The new generation don’t want to learn or be schooled. It’s all about the YOLO.”

I’m in my 30s and a rave vet, and you couldn’t sound like any more of a bitter, pretentious old dinosaur or an asshat if you tried. Jesus Christ.

Why the need to be so condescending? So the younger generation has their own twist on a scene — newsflash: so did you. Your parents probably thought your scene was stupid; they probably thought a sock-hop was the shit, and that a rave was a horrible substitute. Every generation reinvents their surroundings, and cultures evolve along the way. Get off your high horse.

          • David Sound

You’re right. I’m bitter but only because I have a passion for dance music. The difference is I still like disco and respect previous cultures. There’s nothing to respect in the current scene because it lacks culture period and holds no merit. I don’t need to be condescending. I just am. If you’re the same JC from TA, cheers.

Go try to have a deep conversation with any of these kids nowadays at festivals, they are literally the dumbest kids I’ve ever met and I’m embarrassed of what they have done with the scene. The promoters and public schools are really the ones that have ruined it though, not the kids

        • Danny DeZire

          Shut up!

        • JC

You sound like that old guy that grew up on Black Sabbath in the ’70s and will spend the rest of his life wearing their T-shirts, yelling at younger generations for not agreeing that Black Sabbath is the best rock/metal band ever — eventhough lots of stuff has come out in the interm, some innovative and interesting of their own accord, he’s too old and set in his ways to change now — he’s the only enlightened one, and everyone else is around him who doesn’t have his exact opinion is an idiot.

Why the fuck does anyone need to know a pioneer of a genre generations ago to like a song today? That’s one of the most pretentious, condescending assertions I’ve ever heard. Sure, it may add some context to how the scene has developed from point A to point Z, and there may be some element of “Hey, that’s neat” to it, but in what way does that make someone’s enjoyment of music today less valid than yours?

You may have information on an aged music scene like you were doing a research paper for a grade 11 Social Sciences class, but goddamn, have you ever missed the whole point of ENJOYING MUSIC.

          • Neil Rushton

I enjoy plenty of good timeless electronic music. The crap made today is NOT timeless. It’s soulless, the songs are all made with the same computer programs, they all sound the exact same and all have the exact same buildups that truly go nowhere. They have that annoying DROP also. The great ambient melodies of the past are LONG GONE in favor of this electro house shit that is basically hard trance and hard house mixed together and sing songy POP female vocals. All the kids today go to Beatport to get all their music, and it all sounds the same. Even your beloved Deadmau5 said so not that long ago.

          • krb

Preach. Neil has the truth. Education yourselves.

          • yru

Where is this generations Rage Against The Machine?Nirvana?Jimi Hendrix? Lennon? Yea I didn’t think so, STFU and sit down before your moms trust fund runs out.

        • 420rocketeer

Flashforward 20 years: Today’s electronic music becomes oldschool/classic.
Just like how 50 years ago, Jazz was hot shit.
What can’t people just dance to the music they like and throw out the stuff they don’t? Peace, Love, Unity and RESPECT guys…. come on…

          • fugedm

Shut the heck up, bro. Not all music has to be danced to. And the last statement. “Peace, love, unity and respect”. Seriously… Could’ve added YOLO too for some more theatrics

        • Ryan S.

A-fucking-men Neil!!! I totally agree and concur with what you’ve said about “EDM” in this day and age, I thought I was the only one who remembered the term “electronica” (which should be used to describe GOOD and PIONEERING electronic dance music, since the term of “EDM” seems to have been been hijacked/invented by all the young dubstepping YOLOing dumb snots today, as you mentioned).

I’ve been a fan of Electronica since 1996 when the term was in use in the States in its record industry marketing catch-up to the genre (I’m 37 currently, so yea, I’m a cranky old bastard), and you are so correct, the kids today absolutely have no clue about the genre’s history, or how much better the scene was or how much more thought and talent was put into the music back then. It proved to me that Britons/Europeans had (and still have) better taste in music than us redneck rock-n-rollin’ Muricans. Hell, the fans and “DJs” and producers of “EDM” today as it has unattractively blown up in the States (and elsewhere) were all either in diapers or learning how to do arithmetic in school then. Pardon me for sounding like a curmudgeonly Andy Rooney here. :P

Now don’t get me wrong, there still is a small precious handful of electronica/EDM artists of the “new breed” (as James Brown called it) today that are making some brilliant and fabulous music (i.e. Lone, Flying Lotus, Floating Points, Krystal Klear, Eliot Lipp, even Pretty Lights has some good tracks, IMO). I haven’t written off completely electronic dance music as it stands today because there is still some timeless music being made in the genre, but it sure is the sacred few diamonds in the dungheap that EDM is today, diamonds that have kept me from forsaking the genre & scene entirely.

The fact that the young set and their poor taste for electronic dance music nowadays, and most especially their ahistorical ignorance towards the history of electronica, infuriates me as well. I’m glad there’s people like you, Neil, who know their shit and are keeping the torch lit. Preach On!

PS-here’s an article that touches upon the same topics Neil mentioned (especailly the term of “EDM”):

You’re just a fucking old shit head who just realized your life is over and we still have years to go.

Damn, sorry I had to be the one to break it to you man.

Let us enjoy our music and our trend and you can continue being an angry grandfather yelling at kids to get off your lawn.

          • yru

One day your life will be “over” and you will do the same exact thing so stfu, and just listen to the man. I swear the EDM kids have to be the most disrespectful twats when it comes to their elders that i’ve ever seen.

Does this even count as an “article”? There MUST be something more important and engaging to post than this half-hearted rant. Come on.

you used the term EDM so you must be a sellout too

Yeah EDM sucks in general and it’s not because the past was the way it was. It just sucks.

This is hilarious! (a few things I disagree with) Don’t use the abrrev. EDM its electronica or whatever the genre. If you want real music go to Europe. If your into that PLUR stuff, thats cute for you! Who uses the term”Literally Hitler”? I don’t think this person is a seasoned veteran, just someone who ran out of serotonin by doing to much drugs. If you care so much about Deadmau5, his PR is working for him. Plus these comments are awesome, which is probably the reason behind the writing. Deuce!

Lastly, martin garrix is not that bad, he just chose the wrong agent, the wrong label, and the wrong time. If he had done what he is doing 10 years ago, he would be called the guy that changed big room. And everyone still jumps everytime animals is dropped. ooo and Drugs are bad for you dont do them… lol

people that assume $ = success are stupid. bigots are stupid too. you obviously see house music as a commodity. there are people out there that devoted their lives to this music. it’s a way of life. if someone was fucking with your life you’d be upset too. just sayin.
