Magnetic Magazine Guest Podcast: MPHD

A native of the San Franciscan scene is up next on Magnetic Magazine's Guest Podcast series, his name is MPHD. A producer and DJ focusing on fun, MPHD is making moves and selecting the right grooves to keep you party people happy.

"MPHD is just a kid who likes dogs, the internet, and music. There's nothing more to it!" You have to love that simplicity! Personally, MPHD has caused me to go absolutely insane anytime I have seen him play, so be ready for a little bit of insanity in this mix!

MPHD had this to say about this unique mix:

This podcast is comprised of a bunch of new and unreleased tracks I’m really excited about at the moment; I get this feeling with a lot of dance music lately that people are trying to be too safe with their productions, I actually get bored with a lot of the music I hear... I think the tracks in this podcast really manage to stay interesting and push the envelope (without being melt-your-face-off bangers).

As if a mix wasn't enough, MPHD has magnanimously decided to provide a free download for you all! WHAT A GREAT GUY!

We also tossed a few questions at this MPHD character, and here are his definitively MPHD answers!

What is going on with MPHD?

I’ve been having a really active couple of months! I am playing a ton of shows with producers I’m very excited about, writing a lot of new music, and in general just trying to figure out how to manage myself in the music scene. Quiet is one thing I have not been this year.

What is the theme of this podcast? What helped you make these selections?

This podcast is comprised of a bunch of new and unreleased tracks I’m really excited about at the moment; I get this feeling with a lot of dance music lately that people are trying to be too safe with their productions, I actually get bored with a lot of the music I hear... I think the tracks in this podcast really manage to stay interesting and push the envelope (without being melt-your-face-off bangers).

What is the essence of MPHD?

I’m just a kid who likes dogs, the internet, and music. There's nothing more to it.

Your DJ sets are always something special, what is your philosophy for your DJing?

Don’t be afraid to play something out if you really love it; and definitely don’t play tracks that you’re not in love with. I guess that’s a pretty extreme point of view, but the way I play out is really based on having a deep connection with the music that I play. If the DJ doesn’t love the track, then why should the crowd?

What shows do you have lined up that people should be getting excited about?

I’m playing a show this Friday the 21st with Mr. Oizo (my good friend and adoptive techno father) at 1015 Folsom in San Francisco; last time he was here it was a blast (and we had some crazy special guests), and this time around should be just as special! Before the year ends you can also catch me at clubs making trouble with The 2 Bears, Fake Blood, and Oliver.

When can we expect more MPHD productions?

Very soon! I’ve sort of re-done my whole production workflow and I’m experimenting a lot, trying out a lot of new sounds and ways of doing things; you should expect a new EP in just a few months. You can have "Brooklyn" for now as a way to get excited for things to come.

Any chance we have an album coming up soon?

I’m not saying yes, but I’m not saying no. I want to spend a lot of time on my first album and really make sure it feels right, so I won’t promise anything soon; but if an album happens, then it happens!

What is the meaning behind the name MPHD? Or is it a mystery?

It’s not a mystery, however the last guy I told the meaning of my name to disappeared shortly after and was never seen again. I think it’s best for the safety of everyone that I continue to keep it a secret for now.

What are some parting words of wisdom?

Always try to challenge people, and yourself (especially yourself, this is important). Don’t be afraid to play weird shit; don’t be afraid to BE WEIRD. If you aren’t casting a wide net creatively, you’ll never learn about the really out-there and insane things that make you interesting as producer, DJ, or artist.
