Welcome to Magnetic’s Industry Focus, a series where we highlight the major players working behind the scenes of the EDM biz. These are the folks running the record labels, representing the artists, promoting the shows and just getting it done. They may not get the shine of the DJs on stage, but they work just as hard making sure the parties are packed, the music is perfect and that the artists are where they need to be. We’ve decided to shine the light on the behind the scenes movers and shakers.
Today we highlight Chris White, aka Whiiite. With over 8 years in the game, he runs Project and Avalon's famed Control nightclub. He also DJs under the latter moniker, producing hot club tracks and rocking dancefloor's nation wide.
How did you start your career in the electronic music business?
I was a vinyl collector which turned into DJing 3-4 nights a week... which then became throwing events like my party in LA CONTROL @ The Avalon and that led to producing my own music and starting my own brand with the Whiiite Project.
What is the best part of the business?
Honestly this is going to sound cheesy, but I love watching people I know pop off... Guys that Ive been a fan of for years finally make it and have their hard work pay off.
What are the biggest challenges?
I'm not sure I look at things as challenges, but more as opportunities... that may be the lame self help answer, but its really how I feel. Anything can be done it just depends on what you want to do and if you can harness your focus.
What career advice would you recommend to someone just starting off?
I think to try and look at more from a big picture perspective no matter what your doing... and I think finding your hedgehog concept early on is extremely important.
What does electronic music mean to you?
I don't know if its electronic, but music in general is my other wife. Its the thing that drives me, the thing I love, the thing that makes me a better person, and the thing thats always there for me.
What cities/regions do you think electronic dance music is best thriving?
At this point its everywhere!
