It's no longer that cool to see a Hardwell show, namedrop Joel Zimmerman or have a cake thrown in your face. Maybe to you it never was. There's nothing wrong with these things, they've just lost their zeal.

That's why artists like techno legend Carl Craig are regaining momentum by those in-the-know. They represent something more than a good time - true artistry. In this Carl Craig interview, it all starts making sense.

He comes from a surprising mix of instruments and influences and there's a great moment when he discusses Jeff Mills of the techno collective Underground Resistance. You might have noticed that Ultra is featuring a "Resistance" stage this year, so it's all the more fitting that the Mills footage features the following vocals: "what is a DJ if he can't scratch?".

Detroit wasn't exactly known for techno when Carl Craig got his start, but it certainly is now as highlighted by festivals like Movement... festivals that he's still playing today. And the "underground" scene is now ironically becoming the place to be seen.

There aren't a lot of celebrity DJs that can hold a conversation with this level of honesty and discuss the synthesizer's misuse and the guy who invented the modern remix. And there are even fewer fans that have even considered such questions.

But when asked what he thinks the sound of Detroit is, Carl Craig doesn't mention himself or techno. His response darkly atypical. Something you'd never expect to hear from a processed PR release. The sound of Detroit according to Carl Craig - gunshots.

The interview appeared on Bloc TV ahead of Carl Craig's Detroit Love show at Bloc Weekend in London March 13-15th.
