Denver Dispatch: Gorgeous Views, Glorious Music

Colorado. A state world renowned for the best outdoor sports locales, best legal weed, and the best, most diverse music. I've lived in this state all my life, growing up in Colorado Springs, going to school in Durango and Fort Collins, and have finally rested in the capitol of Denver. I grew up with two amazing parents who encouraged me at an early age to listen to whatever made me happy and also never stop finding and exploring. That's why I love Denver and its incredible music scene. There is always something new to find and explore within this city. It has been over 10 years since I started exploring the electronic music world, but as of late I have been really attracted to the tech house, deep house, Nu-disco, and techno revival/movement within the city.

Denver has seen a surge of amazing talent in the electronic music world come through in the past year. From Claude Von Stroke and almost the entire Dirtybird crew, to Black Butter Records artists like Gorgon City and Rudimental, and Future Classic headliners like Classixx and Flight Facilities. As I'm typing this, I'm getting ready to see Flight Facilities perform at the Bluebird Theatre tonight with Touch Sensitive on opening duties! One can't forget the amazing future bass sounds that have been rolling through the Mile High city compliments of the HW&W and Soulection teams. Kaytranada, Mr. Carmack, Sango, and STWO are just a few of the DJ's that have graced us with their presence from these respective labels. This is just the tip of the iceberg that was last year's electronic music scene in Denver.

This city has a huge amount of great venues to choose from whether you are into electronic or not. Massive names like Red Rocks Ampitheatre, the Pepsi Center, Beta Nightclub, the Fillmore, the Ogden, the Bluebird and the 1st Bank Center are mainstays in the music scene here. On the rise in recent years are clubs like Vinyl with their Funktion1 sound system and 4 levels of dancing debauchery. Bar Standard with their summer rooftop parties, HOME Denver lineups and underground bar, Milk.

My personal favorite though is definitely a video game bar called the 1Up on Colfax Ave. Great throwback games like NBA Jam, Golden Axe, and a 4 person table-top Pac-Man blend perfectly with awesome electronic acts such as the Gaslamp Killer, Washed Out, Trippy Turtle, and Amine Edge and Dance, in just this year alone. One should definitely not skip the smaller venues like the Larimer Lounge, which plays host to fantastic Red Bull Sound Select lineups like Marina and the Diamonds and Tokimonsta and will soon have Mercury Prize winners Young Fathers coming through.

I was fortunate enough to see Classixx here about four years back when they played to around 30 people, with GRAFF( formerly Steffi Graf) opening for them. Lost Lake Lounge, another dive bar-esque venue, recently put on Dive Bar Disco. This free event showcased 2 local artists Sam Warren and Neal Robbins aka Fun Factory for a sweaty night of funky pleasures. In October of last year, Lost Lake brought in Gorgon City who spun to about 50 of us. Absolutely unreal. This is just a small taste of what Denver has to offer in terms of venues and I didn't even touch on the after hours spots!

Some of the most notable festivals to look for in Denver and the surrounding areas are Sonic Bloom 10 Year Anniversary happening June 18th-21st at Hummingbird Ranch in Rye. HARD Red Rocks in Morrison, which is going down on July 30th. CMKY in Boulder on April 16-19th and Altitude Anonymous June 12th-14th at Copper Mountain Resort are two festivals that deep heads will surely not want to miss. My favorite from last year had to be the inaugural Cloak & Dagger Music Fest with Cashmere Cat, Holy Ghost!, Martyn b2b Midland( my favorite set) and Sango just to give you a small taste. Look for the second installment of this fest to be happening in September of this year and expect even bigger names than last year!

Last, but certainly not least, I have to give some shout outs to some amazing up and coming crews that you must know about when visiting Denver. These guys and gals are bringing the best of electronic to the Mile High City. Souls in Action, Euphonic Conceptions, theHundred Denver, CMKY, Seifhaus, Awesome Factory, Deep Club, and Afterhours Anonymous just to name a few. Throughout my dispatch series I will be introducing you to new and amazing Denver artists, labels, and crews that make this city what it is. Simply the best!

Thanks for reading and, as always, I'll see you on the dance floor!!
