Caked-Up-April-23-at-Naga

I had the opportunity to interview the, dare I say infamous, Caked Up at the Dim Mak House on South Beach during Miami Music Week. This was an interview I was really looking forward to. I wanted to know who the guys behind the headlines were.

Their laughter would periodically fill the room while everyone was mingling and munching on gnocchi in a way that is sort of analogous to their careers. Sure, they stood out, but they were just having fun. That carefree attitude is contagious. Although their music is not necessarily in heavy rotation on my iPod, after my chat with them, I had a newfound respect for the duo.

We're good hearted people, and that's all that matters to me

While they may come off as brash or flashy, they do in fact carry themselves as professionals and maintain respect for their surroundings (all Crizzly fist-fights aside). The lightning fast rise to fame they experienced was sure to have some growing pains, but the Caked Up I interviewed were pros.

How are you guys enjoying MMW so far?

Oscar: I'm fucking dead to the world, I don't know how my body is even working.

Vegas: I fucking love it!

Oscar: Yeah...

Vegas: But I’m dead.

Oscar: Yeah it’s been a drinking orgy.

A drinking orgy?

Oscar: Yeah non-stop, an orgy of alcohol -

Vegas: - Of alcohol and bros.

Alcohol and bros? That’s an interesting orgy!

Oscar: [Laughs] yeah it’s kinda weird. Some Greek shit for you!

Alright, so let’s get down to it!

Oscar: Let’s get down to the fucking nitty gritty dude!

Look at any DJ that's ever talked shit on us, because there’s none.

Vegas busting out some tricks on the scooter backpacks before a wardrobe malfunction cut it short.

It seems that you guys can’t stay out of the headlines, how have you handled all of the controversy surrounding you these past two years?

Oscar: I laugh and when I see my internet numbers double every time they talk shit it’s funny to me.

Vegas: Yeah, it’s crazy.

Oscar: Honestly, do your re-, not to you, but to like, people that talk shit - do your research and look at any DJ that's ever talked shit on us, because there’s none. All these dudes support us and love us like family. Other people want plays, or hits, or posts, or whatever the fuck, retweets or some shit! I don’t know what the fuck their deal is, but we’re good hearted people man, and like the right people see it and that’s all that matters to me.

Yeah, you guys are just trying to have a good time out here!

Vegas: Yeah, that’s what it’s all about!

I play drum solos on Snoop Dogg’s drum set.

Do you think the critical backlash has something to do with you guys blowing up through Vine?

Oscar: For sure. Well, I mean before Vine was a thing, Snake was playing our remixes out at EDC. People don’t know that shit.

Vegas: Yeah, we’ve been grinding for 15 years, the both of us.

Oscar: Yeah, that’s why I play drum solos on Snoop Dogg’s drum set.

Fuck the negative people. We don’t need them even though they are boosting our shit by hating on us.

Snoop Dogg? That’s dope. So what do you have to say then to all the critics who call you out for plagiarism or use of sample packs?

Oscar: I would like anybody to show me a fucking loop-pack that they haven’t used from fucking Lex Luger, or any of these motherfuckers. Shuuuuut uuuuuuup.

Vegas: Yeah man, loop packs, sample packs, everyone fucking uses it.

Oscar: Honestly, we’re about spreading fucking good vibes.

Oscar: In my opinion, if you have something negative to say, I’m fucking blocking you dude, get outta my face. I don’t deal with that shit. You know what one person told me one time? Don’t respond to one person that’s feeding you stupid, negative energy, and ignore the thousands of people that are saying they love you and have their fucking last name as Wylde on Twitter, you know what I’m saying? Shit like that. I’m not gonna give attention to one negative person when there are so many people that would lose their mind if we -

Vegas: Yeah we have so many supporters that support us. Fuck the negative people. We don’t need them even though they are boosting our shit by hating on us.

Oscar: Yeah, that’s the weird part.

I’ll listen to the lamest pop song and fall in love with it

Yeah, well as they say, any publicity is good publicity.

Oscar: Well no, I don’t agree with that. But I’ll say, if someone hears my music through negativity and they like it, then fuck it, right? Like, you’re gonna get negativity. Dude, I heard about this dude who was a chef and a DJ, who was in a coma for 7 years, he woke up and saw Steve Aoki playing and asked to be put back in a coma. Meanwhile, that guy is my fucking idol who murders crowds every night. You’re ALWAYS gonna get hatred.

Vegas: You’re always gonna have haters.

Oscar: That’s why you need to be able to not even focus on that and focus on the positive. That’s why I feel like we can overcome anything, nothing can phase me at this point.

Yeah man, I can see that. And you guys definitely are bringing the good vibes, you have positive energy and all these people around you, and it’s all love. So for the hundreds of thousands out there who do love you guys, what do you have coming next?

Oscar: Oh. My. God.

Vegas: Tons of shit.

Oscar: We are going fucking HOOD.

Vegas: We’ve got an album coming out.

Oscar: Yeah man, we’re renting out the house that Incubus wrote their 3rd album in, in Long Beach. And yeah, it’s gonna be me on drums, organic as fuck. I don't even know - I don't fucking care what people think about it. I’m at that point where I want to do something completely different, and if people like it they like it.

That’s a really great segue into my last question. Do you think trap is here to stay?

Oscar: I think all genres are everywhere to stay. You’re always gonna have your supporters in every genre. It’s just “what’s popping” at the time, which is bullshit to me. Honestly, all about how shit makes you feel, I’ll listen to the lamest pop song and fall in love with it -

Vegas: [Laughs] It’s true.

Oscar: - Or the hardest trap track. Music is fucking music. Stop fucking judging. If you can quote anything from Caked Up, that’ll be it. Stop fucking judging.
