This new "Deep House Starter Kit" meme has been flying around Facebook and was just begging for a post. First because it's pretty fucking funny. Second because it still shows that people just don't really know what Deep House means?

Let's dive into the "Deep House" thing for starters. Just a quick history lesson to start with, so we are all on the same page. Deep House (definition below) is not really what most of these people are listening to, it's just become a trendy word for people that want to avoid saying the catch all E.D.M. acronym. I say fair enough, there is good reason why many people want to avoid it. Mainstream dance music has become pretty terrible and soulless, so we all want to go "Deep" now.

What new schoolers are listening to is simply modern house music with heavy influences of old school progressive house and tech house, even spots of minimal / minimal techno, essentially a mixture of all these things. I've heard a lot of these new "Deep House" guys/girls DJ, not one of them has dropped a Masters At Work song or anything remotely fucking jazzy. I get it, things evolve but other genres of music don't just start renaming shit. What if we suddenly started calling contemporary jazz music BeBop, just cause we thought it sounded it cool?  Let's stop fucking with the history of our music and start respecting the founders/roots a bit more instead of erasing their genre off the map and making it something else. I think that's fair? Seth Troxler would probably agree... Ha.

Deep house is a subgenre of house music[1] that originated in the 1980s, initially fusing elements of Chicago house with 1980s jazz-funk[2] and touches of soul music.[3] The lengths of the tracks are usually around 7 and 10 minutes and lie between 120-130 bpm. This style of house music can often have an acoustic feeling.[4] Deep house has gained popularity over the years according to Beatport, being one of its top sellers among genres.[5

Next, let's get on to this new underground fashion that very very very few people can pull off. I for one think if you can rock this look, good on ya. It's not easy to pull off, especially if you are a dude. I'm not hating on man buns, future pirates, techno bandoleros, or whatever you want to call them. I'm fucking happy to see interesting fashion/style at festivals and clubs, all good. But there is something a little funny about it, so lighten up maybe? if you are rocking it you probably are doing just fine across the board.

Most importantly. Can we all try to work together to not shit on the history of "Deep House" and the guys who brought us this amazing genre, it really doesn't have much to do with fashion or being cooler than the EDM acroynm. It has to do with remembering our roots and making sure we continue to carry the torch for this genre of House Music we all love so very much.
