Top 10 Tropical House / Chill Tracks - Chart 5.29.15

I like the organic. This has nothing to do with farmers market or Whole (Paycheck) Foods organic; I’m speaking more generally than that. It’s the natural way of doing things that I’m all about.

The unpredictably comforting and unforced progression of living that just feels like it’s meant to lay – going to an old theater and seeing a movie on 35mm with the sparks and flashes of the celluloid film, the smell and feel of a crisp newspaper as you read it on a comfy Sunday morning over coffee and bacon, meeting a friend or someone more than a friend in a way that seems like it was just a chapter in Your book and you merely turned the page.

I love those unprocessed, analog moments of seeing life mold itself and it’s nice to just stop from the hustle and enjoy them. This week I chose a selection of artists that aren’t trying too hard, loving the excitement of releasing new music for their fans, playing their own damn instruments, building up new vocalists, and creating a unique signature sound to stand out from the rest of the artists washing up on our sandy shore. Chill, vibe, groove organically and may life turn the corner on all of us this summer in the best of ways…

QUICK NOTE: The full playlist can be found at the bottom of this article if you just wanna jam all the way through! Enjoy

1

"Drive (J-Kraken Remix)"
Pollimer
The stoke is real. The stoke of J-Kraken, the stoke of this song, the stoke of this listener and the stoke of the summer. You can tell J-Kraken came into this ready to rip open the curtain and let that summer sunshine in. Pollimer’s soft vocals give this ripper a nice cushy wave to ride on and the first track in his remixer’s 2015 arsenal is worthy of my numero uno spot this week. Welcome back summer, and welcome back J-Kraken.

2

"King (Gryffin Remix)"
Years & Years
When I opened SoundCloud and saw that Gryffin released a new track I shouted to the heavens at my desk like I was the N64 kid that’s now in the Taco Bell commercials. And he remixed Years & Years who my roommate Ryan and I go crazy for like all the other middle school girls? EVEN BETTER. This scintillating head bobber is the perfect beachy chill/house party hybrid house song and people are gonna go nuts for it wherever they’re enjoying life.

3

"Renegades feat. Lakshmi"
Majestique
Eskimo Recordings
The Dutch duo takes us into the Doc Brown’s Delorean and guns it for 1977 and back again on a slow cruise through the synthy analog eras. These guys have a sound that should make Emperor Giorgio look down from his throne of groove and bring them on tour. Lakshmi has a voice like the singer of CHVRCHES and I’m drop dead in love with the disco babe she portrays in the track. Eskimo Recordings dropped “The Orange Collection” recently and it’s chock full of tasty creamsicle flavor tunes thats worth your weekend ears.

4

"Coming Home (Lost Kings)"
Gorgon City
Can’t get enough of Lost Kings over here. My friends and I can collectively say this LA duo has been a highlight of 2015 in our weekly rompings. Gorgon City already has that high potent punch with a smooth jam touch but Lost Kings manages to emulate the energy even more. These gents will be making the US rounds this summer so be sure to party it up with dem boys when they find their way to your discolit dancehall.

5

"Back Back Back (FDVM Bootleg)"
Anthony D’Amato
I don’t know how I miss tracks like this but I’m glad we’re together now and I can share it with you. You gotta let the big blue sky join the party to this strummer. The melodic beat beachy bassline give this strummer a gorgeous roaming feeling that can only be enjoyed with a spoonful of sun rays and a jump in the water. I don’t care what kind - hot, cold, ocean, river, murky or crystal clear. Just maybe don’t jump in the water in Santa Barbara right now. FDVM knows feel good music and their new May mixtape must be enjoyed as soon as you’re done with this chart.

6

"White Lies feat. Jenni Potts (Crush Effect Remix)"
Odesza
What is this horn you used Crush Effect? A warped baritone sax? That brass got some ass. Tempted to free my freakin mind to this psychedelic swaggered song, I almost just closed my eyes on the 405 and floated off with the string section but decided I’d rather be able to listen to it again. Maybe I was hypnotized by the tambo or quite possibly Potts’ reverbed siren song made me not think straight. Whatever the case, I’m just glad I’m here to share it with you all now. There are a ton of Odesza remixes out there that I usually just skim over them but luckily my homie Blake keeps his ears open and shot me this one. I think this take is the most original I’ve heard and I will definitely be looking out for more Crush Effect movin forward.

7

"Lose It (Jerry Folk Remix)"
Oh Wonder
Next Wave Records
Oh Wonder continues to be remixed and Jerry Folk continues to deliver incredible remixes. He builds an entirely new song around the vocals almost every time and I’m sure the artists he works with are just blown away to these reimaginings. Oh Wonder as I’ve said too many times now are the truth and their vocals have that perfect bounce for this almost latin flavored disco track. I wanna bust out some hip shaking salsa moves at certain points. The slow drifting sections are melt worthy and I love that Jerry Folk is able to capture all these sides of a listener's’ emotions in a four minute track. Great selection for your weekend discopades.

8

"Equal Game feat. David Lageder"
ManiezzL
Tonspiel
The lads from Salzberg are now known as the melodic house Mozarts as they share the same hometown. This is the first original I’ve heard from their new EP and I am thoroughly impressed. David Lagender’s voice is so unique and really gives it a great style aside from the slick guitar riffs and soft percussive dips and dots scattered throughout the song. Baptize yourself in this beachy bassline and beat and you’ll be ready for anything under the sun.

9

"L$D (Terry Urban Remix)"
A$AP Rocky
A$AP Rocky’s new album is hot fire flames. Listen to the entire thing all the way through, multiple times. This retouch by Terry Urban keeps the song almost fully intact with just the right amount of house thump and uptempo beat which I greatly appreciate. Maybe it’s because he didn’t have time to work on it since the album literally just came out but regardless I was so happy to see it pop up on my feed. I apologize in advance because this song is going to be on repeat all week, all weekend, all summer. I highly recommend watching the original track’s music video...

10

"Unstoppable (FKJ Remix)”
Lianne La Havas
The french know how to funk you up. FKJ just rolled through LA for the first time earlier this week and I’m kicking myself in the head for missing his live act.. I hear it was a damn good time and kudos to Sound Nightclub for booking him. The fresh squeezed French Kiwi Juice is a man of many talents, rocking the guitar and keyboard while laying down some step worthy flavor on the decks. Its rare that an artist can make you rethink if you’re actually listening to electronic music which I attest to his ear for nu-R&B and soul talent to reimagine and collab with. We are definitely in an era where jazzy production, instrumentalists and those soulful pipes are starting to re-flourish and be truly praised by bloggers and listeners alike.

Top Mix Of The Month

"1 Year Anniversary Mix by MOWE”
The Dancing Pineapple
Our groovin fruit friends at The Dancing Pineapple have certainly grown into quite the crop over just one year. Within the last couple of months I've had the pleasure of getting to know the men behind the fruit, enjoying some SNBRN sunshine vibes at CRSSD Fest and just chatting about great music and even better times.

When I talked about being organic, this tastemaker and soon to be label is as true as they come. They love the tunes they curate, they live the lifestyle of tropical and chill and they genuinely want to be a part of the community and help raise awareness of artists and the genre. The Trop Fam is what its all about and its been a pleasure getting to watch TDP and Tropikult (the other part of the Fam) flourish and make a name for themselves. They're great men with big moves ahead. If you don't know, you will know.

To celebrate their one year anniversary they curated a mix by none other than the Austrian dynamic duo MÖWE who, on equal terms, is really taking off and headed for big things and places. I can't wait to see what another year will bring these guys and I wish them the best as always. Raise your mai tais, cheers to The Dancing Pineapple!
