Ah, Miami... My favorite city. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again; this is the clubbing capital of the Western Hemisphere -- potentially the world. I grew up a raver in the SF Bay Area, partying in the city, Oakland and Santa Cruz, and I’ve lived in LA and seen everything that SoCal has to offer. I’ve partied in London at the legendary Fabric Nightclub and I’ve gotten down in Madrid, Tokyo, and Las Vegas. After all of these experiences, I feel very comfortable in saying there is not a city on this planet quite like Miami.
There are a myriad of reasons why Miami is in a league all its own, but I’ve narrowed the list down to a cool seven that I think all clubbers can appreciate. Here is why you need to book your tickets to South Beach as soon as possible!
"There ain’t no party like a Miami party ‘cuz a Miami party don’t stop!"
The 24 Hour Liquor Licenses
What I’m sure Coolio meant to say was “there ain’t no party like a Miami party ‘cuz a Miami party don’t stop!” This city was built on the nightlife industry and because of that fact the local government has enabled the clubs to operate at their discretion. It’s not uncommon for clubs to close the doors at 9 am and to keep the party going well into the afternoon. One well-known example of this was Loco Dice’s marathon set this New Year’s eve at Club Space; He played continuously for 24 hours. Yes, you read that right: 24 hours. From 10pm to 10 pm. Granted, that was New Years and it was the legendary Loco Dice, but the high profile of that event is the only reason the whole world knows about it. Don't be fooled, things like that happen year round.
The Beautiful People
This city is full of could-be models. A 10 on the west coast is above average in Miami, and I am not exaggerating by any means. The general population in South Beach is very conscious of their looks and put in hours at the gym to maintain their physique. While this may come across as superficial to some – and to a certain extent, it is – looking good is key to feeling good, and feeling good is what the clubbing industry is all about. Let’s be honest, who doesn’t want to party with a bunch of gorgeous humans?
Miami truly beats to a different drum. I’ve heard deep tech house in the lobby of almost every hotel in South Beach and I’ve actually heard Jungle at a Chili’s (I’m not joking). The Afro-Caribbean and Spanish influences on this city has everyone ready to dance at any given moment, so it is no wonder the locals take their Dance Music seriously. This mentality is a big part of why the biggest Dance/Electronic Music conference in the world is held in Miami and is a key reason why this city is at the forefront of the American Dance Music movement. There is truly something here for everyone. Anyone looking for sexy beats to groove to will find what they are looking for, whether it be mainstream or underground.
The Sound Systems
Because of the importance that the clubbing industry places on the music that flows through their speakers, they almost always ensure that sound systems back up the heavy beats that get the dance-floors pumping. The sound is always the first priority, then comes the bar and the other amenities that contribute to the experience. They avoid splurging on lights, go-gos, poi/hula hoopers and all of that nonsense because they know why the audience is there, to dance. South Beach promoters are the antithesis to the EDC wannabes of the West Coast; they bring fresh talent to play on killer sound systems, and that’s it.
"You don’t have to worry about risky driving or outrageous über fees"
The primary location of all the clubs on South Beach is on and around Collins Avenue on South Beach. If you have a designated driver you can park your car in one of the many fairly priced parking garages in the area and enjoy countless venues that are all within walking distance of each other. You can club hop all you want and stop for a Cuban coffee or slice of pizza – or even some delicious sushi – at your leisure before continuing to your next destination. You don’t have to worry about risky driving or parking, or outrageous über fees, as long as the girls you’re with can tough out a block or two in high heels.
While the heat may be a little relentless during the day, night times in Miami are absolutely gorgeous; a consistent 70-80 degrees of comfort at all times, what more could you ask for?
Although the amount of tourists in this city can be overwhelming at times during Spring Break and MMW, it is actually quite fun to go clubbing surrounded by out-of-towners. They are beyond stoked to just be partying in Miami and that enthusiasm is contagious. When you see their eyes light up as they walk into a club and their smiles stretching from ear to ear it is truly heart warming. And it reminds you how good you really have it as a local.
