Over the past few days, we've seen talks across a couple dance music blogs and Twitter about a musical involving deadmau5. While the blogs made it clear within their text that the musical had nothing to do with deadmau5, crafty headlines and people not taking a close enough look at the story led to some confusion.
It was pretty obvious from one listen that this had nothing to do with the deadmau5 brand, and you don't have to be a rocket scientist to know that Joel was going to get involved. Blogs pushing the story helped this happen a lot more rapidly though, and today Joel posted two tweets with the full cease and desist letter. His lawyers made it clear that this was copyright infringement, and further legal action would be taken if not removed within the next 24 hours.
deadmau5 always seems to be locked in some form of legal battle including a recent bout with Disney, and he is about the last person you would want to mess with when it comes to lawyers and copyright infringement. Joel did mention that he appreciated their intent, but there was a right and wrong way to handle something. This was obviously the wrong way.
You can view their full website here, where they make it clear that deadmau5 is not involved and it's a parody. You also get a full list of the actors and a pretty hilarious description of what the story is about. It appears these Canadians have been working on this for a while, and you can hear some samples from a few years back. You can also buy tickets, and that's where this continues to get even more hilarious. Regardless, we respect Joel for protecting his brand.
Update: The Soundcloud has already been removed, and we have a feeling the website is next. The shows are supposed to start in a few weeks at Toronto's Fringe Festival, so we will see how far that goes.
"Deadmouse: The Musical is a musical about a mouse who wants to be a house DJ but is discriminated against for being a mouse. It does not feature the music or Deadmau5. Think Ratatouille meets Book of Mormon."
