After teasing it on Instagram, Calvin Harris dropped "How Deep Is Your Love" today, his new collaboration with the Disciples. It's a shift from his Motion days, but like most of his recent output, the track feels designed to be a hit around today's biggest trends - downtempo, rumbling deep house.
I'm a bit mixed on the track. It feels so strongly like a Disciples track with only a hint of Calvin Harris. I still remember the I Created Disco age, when Calvin was at the forefront of the late-2000s EDM boom, helping define the direction of its sound through hits like "Accceptable in the 80s". Now, for real, the hook repeats "how deep is your love?" over the most rote, checking-off-all-the-boxes sort of deep house groove. While there's more exciting fare in the house circuit like SNBRN's "GFE" remix right now, Calvin definitely puts together a song in line with his current sound and that will fit well into his sets.
He also commented this morning on his relationship with Taylor Swift, telling KISS FM UK that "it was going absolutely fantastic" and admitting that he doesn't know if they will collaborate musically. Calvin added: "it’s interesting because obviously there’s different things written about it every day and even if we don't do anything publicly for a while, someone will make something up...There’s a whole bunch of times where we’ve been hanging out and nobody’s clocked it. It’s not like every single time we go out, we get a photograph taken of us."
