In such a large city, the number of bars is countless. Yet, for those who regularly spend an evening out on the town, these are the top five Detroit bars. What qualifications were necessary to make this list? Location, general environment, the staff and, of course, the music.

The "newest" of the Detroit bars, Populux (formerly known as The Magic Stick) officially re-opened this past April with a bang. It's a large venue that reminds you of major clubs in Brooklyn and Chicago, bringing in huge artists and acts. Best part? Rooftop balcony!

Exodos Rooftop Lounge

Top 5 Detroit Bars

Rain or shine, Exodos is a phenomenal bar. Situated in the midst of Greek Town, it hosts a variety of different acts, including a relatively-new Techno Thursday that features local DJs. It's spacious indoor and outdoor dance floors and inexpensive cover, coupled with the mere fact it is on a rooftop landed it the number four spot.

The Works

Ever been to a warehouse party? Take that, add extremely friendly bartenders, creative stage design and fully stocked bars. That is The Works. If you ask anyone in Detroit one of the best places to go for some of that gritty, booty-shakin' Detroit music, chances are The Works will be on their list.

TV Lounge

Top 5 Detroit Bars

TV Lounge is yet another staple in Detroit. It has a spacious indoor dance floor, as well as an outdoor patio area. One of the production companies in Detroit, Paxahau, hosts a variety of their events and shows at TV Lounge so there is never a shortage of "big names" hailing those stages. It is also the place to go for great, home-grown talent. Friendly staff, relatively-clean bathrooms and amazing music... It's a no-brainer for TV to be Detroit's #2 bar.

The first bar I went to in Detroit was The Grasshopper. Huxley was in town and a friend brought me along. Little did I know, that bar and that music would soon be staples in my life. That night, I bought a beer from the bar that was promptly knocked out of my hand. My now-favorite bartender magically appeared at my side with a new beer and a smile on her face. Everyone who works there, both at the bar and at the door, is extremely friendly and they consistently host quality shows, featuring artists from across the world. The Grasshopper is, without a doubt, THE bar you simply have to visit next time you are in the city.
