Spring hasn’t quite sprung in the British Isles yet but the bright and steadfast sounds making their way out of headphones, sound systems and tinny laptop speakers more than make up for it.
The beginning of the month marked the release of Kano’s first album in six years. Dubbed by GRMDaily as an "an open letter to a generation," it matches soul, honesty and melodicism. The Grime vet proves he’s still in top form, but meanwhile the new fervent youth are releasing furious tracks and spitting the realest bars.
Here’s some of the best from the last month…
Riko Dan – 'Gun Take'
Riko Dan brings his distinctive flow and tones to the 'One Take' riddim after saying "once I see Flowdan do one I thought 'that's it'!"
YGG – 'Don’t Talk Like That'
YGG, regulars on Spyro’s Rinse FM show and Spooky’s BBC 1xtra slot, were tipped last year as one to watch and it’s easy to see why. This one bangs.
Yung Reeks – 'Came From Nothing'
Big on the American trap vocalizer tip here, but Yung Reeks bars come in and we are back in the land of UK Grime. His mixtapes are forever consistent - it’s only a matter of time before he blows.
Too many man on this one and that’s probably why it bangs ten times as hard. P Money leads big names on this remix including Jammz, AJ Tracey, Coco AND the rest… buckle up.
Slick Don – 'Brap'
‘Made in Brum, not Bow E3!’ – coming in strong from the off, Slick Don reps 0121. It ain’t all about London and here one of Birmingham’s finest proves exactly why.
Scrufizzer x So Solid Crew - 'Dun Kno Already (Swiss & Mac Version)'
You might remember that Scrufizzer’s original remix made an appearance a few months ago, but now it’s time for him to go in again on the remix, with Swiss and M.A.C on a fierce collab. Hard bars, crazy energy and again, a timeless garage beat.
Kannan x Eyez ft Kamar - 'Fire Burning'
Cooling down the pace, Kannan and Eyez bring some realness to a smooth beat. ‘Fire Burning’ is taken from the forthcoming EP Highs and Lows – watch this space!
YJ – '2016'
Coming for 2016, it’s YJ. He weaves determination and intelligence through his bars so watch his EP – ‘it’s coming and it’s way too strong!’
Potter Payper - 'Real Life (Black Impala)'
Essex MC Potter boasts witty bars and a beat that hooks you in from the off. It’s a short one though - it goes in but leaves you wanting just that little bit more.
Bonkaz and Stormzy have teamed up to spit about growing up in South and dat. With these two on a track together it’s obviously going to be an absolute weapon - treat your ears.
