Anika Embarks on Debut North American Tour This Fall
Have you heard Anika's self-titled debut album via Stones Throw? I’m pretty hooked—definitely seduced. It strikes with a New York's '80s no wave sound (think 99 Records—history about the imprint 99 here). The nine songs run the gamut from experimental rock ("Yang Yang"), to soulful country ("End of the World"), to folk ("Masters of War"), to pop ("I Go To Sleep"). The self-titled album was recorded live in 12 days, with three band mates, Geoff Barrow (Portishead), Billy Fuller and Matt Williams, together in one room and no overdubs. This wide spectrum showcases Anika's expansive range, prescient talents and uncanny ability to string together a cohesive, disparate collection of moods. It’s an experience in uneasy yet easy listening.
After extensive touring throughout the UK and Europe, the England-born, Berlin-bred Anika finally embarks on a long awaited tour of North America. Flanked by key appearances at the Portishead-curated All Tomorrows Parties in Asbury Park, NJ and MoogFest in Asheville, NC. I’m super bummed that there’s no Los Angeles date booked as of now. The optimist in me says that’ll change.
