Dubstep DJ and producer 12th Planet (born John Dadzie) is a busy man. Between the massive Mothership Tour (with Skrillex, Nadastrom, Two Fresh, J-Rabbit, Dillion Francis to name a few), his recently released 3-track EP, “Who Are We” and celebrating 5 years of SMOG, which he serves as frontman of along with artists SPL, Flinch, DLX and EMU, it’s pretty shocking guy had the time to take part in our “The Magnetic Seven” series of Q&As. But he did and here it is.
I never plan ahead; Im only living in the now. I am not sure what to expect in the future.
Introduce yourself to Magnetic readers.
Hi, I'm 12th Planet. I am a dubstep enthusiast from Los Angeles. My loft is always clean, kinda. I have no pets. I spend most of my days on the road, or working on music. When I'm in the studio, I'm mostly collaborating with my favorite artists, or I'm on the couch watching HBO/AMC series on Sundays. I'm turned on mostly by T&A, and turned off by girls who forget to flush the toilet. I believe in astrology, I am a Gemini. I rarely eat more than 1 meal a day. I don't cook. My favorite drink is vodka & whatever. The top 5 songs in my iTunes folder are: #1 Juicy J “A Zip And A Double Cup,” #2 Juicy J “So Damn F*cked Up,” #3 Wiz Khalifa “Rich People,” #4 Juicy J “Stoner's Night” and #5 Skrillex “Voltage.” I believe your character defines your style. I don't have much free time, but when I do, I drink Dos Equis. I don't sleep, I wait.
How would you describe your sound to a deaf person?
I would say just feel it.
What was your favorite toy as a child and when/why did you stop playing with it?
I love Legos, I still play with em too!
Any colorful incidents involving a fan?
I'd have to say, in Houston this guy made a caricature of me and Skrillex on a tee shirt. That was awesome.
Favor us with a moment in life that changed the course of, or defined, your aesthetic philosophy.
Reading the 12th Planet by Zechariah Sitchin, really changed my life.
Your creative arc. Alpha to omega, go.
I like to produce in the studio in my loft the most. I built it with my boy BJ with our bare hands and wood. I generally just go in there and mess around, and if I like something I finish it. But generally 1 out of every 15 projects actually sees the light of day. I use Logic, Ableton and every VST/AU I can get my hands on.
The movement from CD to MP3 was a big paradigm shift in the music biz. Crystal ball time. What will be the next big shake up? How are you going to come out on top?
I never plan ahead; I'm only living in the now. I am not sure what to expect in the future.
