Occupying Post-Apocalyptic Savannahs: Makossa & Megablast’s Second LP, Soy Como Soy

While the rest of the world camps out in city centers and prominent financial districts, Makossa & Megablast are focused on a different revolution. The Vienna duo recently released their second studio effort Soy Como Soy, espousing an eclectic musical style that occupies a genre-space between Latin and Afrobeat. Returning to their native Vienna to record the LP at LuvLite’s recording studio, Makossa & Megablast build upon the sultry, afternoon-sunset-in-a-sub-tropic-town vibe presented in their track of the same name, which became an underground hit in Ibiza last summer, included on playlists by Carl Craig, Laurent Garnier, Gilles Peterson, Bob Sinclair. The 15-track album evokes an experience akin to exploring a post apocalyptic savannah at sundown, as mutated, technology-infused predators creep out of rusting-car-shelters, chasing you on your hovercraft. This is accomplished through a refreshing synthesis of dub, Afrobeat, Latin, techno, house, minimal, and a long-list of internationally renowned musicians such as Tony Allen, Hubert Tubbs, and Cleydys Villalon, adding a fresh perspective to the global electronic music dialogue currently underway. Also be sure to check out the 2007 release that spurred Makossa & Megablast’s career, Kunuaka.
