Winter Music Conference is fun and all. The first time I attended was in’96 and I’ve pretty much been each year since—minus the last 3 years. WMC, Miami Music Week, whatever the hell you wanna call it these days, isn’t what it used to be. No, there were no hills to climb barefoot and I’m not going to get into any “back in my day” jokes, but you did actually have the opportunity to get some business done around the Fontainebleau hotel pool, if you wanted to. Those days are over.
There’s been talk and rumors over the years about WMC moving from Miami. Every time I hear someone bring it up, Las Vegas is always mentioned as a viable host. It makes sense; it’s not hard to draw comparisons between the two and considering the way electronic music is currently impacting mainstream culture and commerce, a conference that props up the business side to what’s happening is needed. Enter Insomniac. EDM’s biggest promoter is launching the EDMbiz conference prior to Electric Daisy Carnival on June 8-10 in Las Vegas. The conference will be held June 5-7, as part of EDC Week, at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas.
The conference will focus on moving EDM forward on a credible and prosperous path. EDMbiz will facilitate relevant discussion and debates focused on the most pertinent topics and issues specific to the scene including: best practices, social media, technology platforms, festivals, direct-to-fan relationships, licensing, branding, sponsorships, and sustaining community, humanity and credibility during a period of massive growth.
Jason Bentley, consummate tastemaker, tireless champion of new music and culture, and a globally respected DJ, will serve as the conference host. “As electronic dance music reaches new heights of popularity and influence in 2012, EDMbiz has been conceived as a key forum for business development in the community,” said Bentley. “The EDM lifestyle touches all corners of pop culture today and by creating a smart and effective conference just ahead of the single largest electronic dance music festival in North America, EDMbiz is uniquely positioned to be an essential crossroads for new ideas and opportunities.”
Panelists and keynote speakers will include world renowned electronic artists as well as top executives from AM Only, Atlantic Records, Atom Factory/Atom Empire, Burning Man, Citizen Net, Glassnote Records, Insomniac, Marquee Nightclub & Dayclub, Mobile Roadie, Pacha, Red Light Management, Strategic Group, TAO, Topspin Media, Turntable.fm, Twitter, William Morris Endeavor and The Windish Agency, among many more.
Registration for the conference will be on sale on May 3, 2012, at 10 am here. Registration will provide access to conference programming as well as complimentary entrance to parties at Las Vegas’ finest nightclub venues each evening. The first round of speakers and special events will be announced on May 1 with subsequent announcements as more speakers and a variety of events are confirmed.
