Chicago’s premier rising dubstep/electro trio, Krewella, recently announced the release of their new EP and in support of said release they kick off their North American tour tonight in Las Vegas at Surrender. After creating buzz across the web with their video for “Killin It” earlier this year, the three rising stars continue to push their unique flavor of female-vocal driven dubstep. It’s mainly due to their love for all ends of electronic music that Krewella is considered one of the more exciting young acts in America. Their new EP, "Play Hard" is out June 6 and we were fortunate enough to snag Jahan, Yasmine and Rainman for a few questions before they hit the road.
Are there any cities or club nights you’re looking forward to playing most?
Many white things including towels, walls and sofas were damaged beyond repair.
We’re stoked to play at red rocks because it’s an epic venue. Also soldier field for spring awakening in June because it our hometown and we get to dress up like superheroes :).
Any colorful incidents involving a fan ?
One of our fans quit their job to make it to our NYC show, but got too drunk to actually make it to the show.
Do you have any pets? What do they do while you’re on the road?
We have 2 adorably obese cats that our wonderful friend is cat sitting for us.
Do you have any pre-gig routines?
Hands in the middle “1...2...3...TROLL.”
Is being on the road friendly to your creative process?
Experiences in different cities, meeting new people, and foreign geography is incredibly inspiring. However, it’s a bit tricky creating music on the road because we’re constantly on the move.
How much of your set changes from gig to gig?
We generally play whatever the fuck we want. If the crowd looks horny we are bound to drop some hood shit to get folks grinding.
Do you travel with an entourage?
We roll deep as fuck. We require 2 managers to babysit us and are looking into a tour manager to keep our shit on lock. Cuz truthfully we are a ball of confusion sometimes. We like to have our favorite prodigy film dude, Miles, on the road with us. We are currently scheming in how to smuggle our cats on tour.
What’s on your Rider?
Jamo. Saran wrap for backsplash from the champagne. And different exotic fishes, cuz this shit is fuckin' ridiculous.
If you were huge what would be on your Rider?
Cats. Socks/underwear. A masseuse.
Do you have a favorite airline?
Virgin Airlines because it looks like a club on the plane.
What’s your drink of choice?
In the AM, coffee and Kahlua. When the sun sets, Jamo on the rocks.
First class or coach?
Coach 4 life. We’ve been banned from first class.
What items do you always take with you on the road?
Condoms. Enough socks for a small African country. Granola bars. Tussin. Xanax. Razors. Flat billed hats to conceal post-show sweaty hair.
What’s the most memorable time you’ve had on the road outside of the club?
We played in Fresno, CA on Yasmine’s birthday and one of the promotors was kind enough to bring a chocolate cake for her. We brought it back to the hotel and a jamo-infused cake fight ensued. Many white things including towels, walls and sofas were damaged beyond repair.
What the first thing you do when you wake up?
Turn my swag on.
What the last thing you do before you go to sleep?
If people were really to listen after you shook their hand for the first time, what would you say to them?
Wash your hands.
If you were to describe your sound as a scent, a signature fragrance as it were, what would it be called?
KrewSmella. Top notes: Sweat, semen, sneakers. Heart notes: Whiskey and fog juice. Bass notes: Mildew, chlorine, cigarettes.
How would you describe your sound to a deaf person?
Do you read books on the road?
We just downloaded Bible App for $0.99. Tryna get saved on the road.
How do you like to spend your free time/days off on the road?
Last time we had a day off was for 2 hours in Daytona Beach, Florida.
