A talk with Max Vangeli & AN21

There is a lot of hype surrounding your first full length artist album People Of The Night. When is it expected to drop finally?

Yeah we have been waiting for this for a very long time, and there has been a lot of anticipation on this of course. I think at this point the two of us are more excited about the release than anyone else, and we have the date.  It's August 06th 2012

It was really amazing actually, especially working with Steve. We learn so much from him every time we sit down in the lab. I think the most exciting tho is to work with singers at recording sessions. There is always so much energy and good vibe.

It must feel surreal to have the album done…did it prove to be very difficult selecting what cuts would make the album? How did you go about this process?

We have done over 30 records for the album, but at the end of the day it's important to make the appropriate selection and make some cuts.  It's a matter of testing things out, and just listening a lot.

How long it take to piece the album together?

Well the main ideas were probably done within a year, but it's a matter of tweaking adding new ideas and juggling things around so at the end it took us about two years.

People of the night definitely have a lot to look forward to, as there are many huge tracks on the album that fans are sure to have already heard in your sets, but the rest of the world gets to experience them after the release. Tell us about the numerous big time collaborations for this album.

We worked with a lot of great artists on this one. Obviously Steve Angello, Tiesto, Michael Woods, Moguai, Congorock, Kim Fai, etc.  It's going to be fun!

What was this experience like working with so many talented producers? How was the synergy in the studio?

It was really amazing actually, especially working with Steve. We learn so much from him every time we sit down in the lab. I think the most exciting tho is to work with singers at recording sessions.  There is always so much energy and good vibe.

Do you guys wear different hats or play different roles in the studio and during your live sets, or is it always in unison?

We are two very different guys and both have very different opinions, which is why I think we are so good as a team.

What is your guys schedule like this summer?

It's going to be crazy! Obviously Ibiza this summer with shows at Pacha, Amnesia, Ushuaia. And of course a lot of Size Maters shows as well including the UK and the rest of Europe.

Size Matters was a massive success and undertaking in LA a couple weeks ago at The Palladium. What kind of planning went into this production?

I think it was about making sure we are all on the right page, and finding the right date for all of us to be there. Of course the production has to be done properly and everything needs to be carefully marketed to make sure it's a packed house.

Did you guys play any exclusives?

Well we are always playing the exclusives, mainly our album stuff.  Testing it out, trying out new edits and things like that.

How did it feel to do this in your new hometown and without having to jump on a plane? Did it feel like a sort of homecoming show?

It was amazing! All three of us were fresh and didn’t have to worry about traveling, and of course we have a huge following in LA and it's nice to have everyone there.

One of my favorite moments of the night was when you played Pryda "Allein," as it was the first time I had heard the tune live and was chilling. AN21, you stated on your twitter that this was the essential rack of the week for you. What is it about this track and Prydz's productions that do it for you?

It's about the beautifully structured production of the track. It's so clean and full of emotion, and it just makes me happy every time I hear it.

You guys will be playing at XIV Summer Sessions this weekend, have you heard the tales about this party? Might have to catch up with you guys there.

Yeah we heard that it's madness there!  And that’s the way we like it.

There was tons of buzz about your set at EDC New York for those lucky enough to catch it. Maybe it was even a little pre-mature album release/listening party you could say.

Yeah our set consisted mainly of the album stuff, and we were really happy to see the reaction!  The feedback was amazing and definitely feels good.

What's on your rider? If you could have anything on your rider, would it change?

Lots of Jager always!  And all the basic stuff I guess, but if we really want to go loose there is always a way to change things.
