On The Road With Master Flight Tactician Doorly—With A Bottle Of Tequila In Tow.

Doorly will be taking a break from his Ibiza Rocks residency to come our way for a nine-show tour, see dates below. If you haven’t seen him do this thing on four turntables you’re missing out.

Beyond his imminent tour, be on the lookout for two singles via Doorly’s label, Pigeonhole This!, this summer. The first is a power dubstep collaboration with a producer who might be just as eclectic as Doorly himself—Beardyman. The second single leans to the house/pop side of the spectrum—vocally driven by collaborator Soraya Vivian—and will fit snugly into any solid Doorly set.

I love an espresso martini after my pre-gig meal, it gives me a wake up kick and also gets me started on the drunk train!

Are there any cities or club nights you’re looking forward to playing most on this trip?

I'm really looking forward to Boys & Girls at Webster Hall in New York, it's such a great venue and a wicked party, plus it's the first show of the tour so that in itself is always exciting.

Do you have any pets? What do they do while you’re on the road?

Yes I have two dogs, cute little Yorkshire terriers called Timmy & Maggie. I have a kind of shared custody thing with my ex girlfriend so she has them while I’m touring and I have them when I’m home. Timmy is an exceptional football player and is actually employed by the football club in my old home town as their halftime mascot where he goes on the pitch and performs tricks for the crowd, he's a little superstar, here’s a video of him in action:

Do you have any pre-gig routines or green room rituals?

I love a nice cocktail before a gig just to loosen me up in a nice way so I use a few different apps to go and find a decent cocktail bar in whatever city I’m in.

Do you work on music while touring?

Yep, I make most of my music on trains and planes, at least getting ideas going anyway, there's so much inspiration when you're touring new, different and interesting places and the great thing about planes is that there is no Internet or phone signal so no distractions and no opportunities to procrastinate on anything but work!

What’s on your Rider?

  1. A Bottle of Patron tequila

  2. Pineapple juice

  3. Ginger Ale

  4. Some beers

  5. A towel

  6. A local postcard

Pineapple and tequila makes a kind of poor-man’s margarita! Only 2 people have ever got me the postcard.

If you were the biggest musician in the world, what would be on your Rider?

  1. A personal cocktail Mixologist fully stocked

  2. A fresh salad bar

  3. A vegetarian sushi chef

  4. A cliché bowl of only blue M&M's

  5. A Doorly lookalike

  6. A set of chess pieces, hand carved from Peruvian cucumber

Do you have a favorite airline?

Yep British Airways, I’m an absolute flight tactician with air miles, I’m like George Clooney in the movie Up In The Air. If you ever meet me don’t ask me about it because I will bore you for hours on this subject!

What’s your drink of choice?

I love an espresso martini after my pre-gig meal, it gives me a wake up kick and also gets me started on the drunk train!

First class or coach?

Again, referring back to the airline question above, I’m a master flight tactician so I always find a way to fly business class without paying full fare. It makes such a difference to have a flat bed on the long haul flights I do because I usually fly straight after a gig and then have another one as soon as I land.

What items do you always take with you on the road?

An iPad fully stocked with new movies and TV shows, my laptop obviously with a full studio set up running, a pair of running shoes (that I never actually use but it's the thought that counts!) My amazing luxury memory foam travel cushion which enables me to sleep anywhere anytime, The new Pioneer RMX1000 which adds so much to my set, and a power extension lead because I hate those hotels that have the power socket nowhere near the bed so you have to pick between getting out of bed to turn your alarm off in the morning or not charging your phone!

What’s the first thing you do when you get up in the morning?

Hit snooze, go back to sleep and then basically do that for an average of one hour until I have to drag my sorry ass out of bed.

You probably shake a lot of hands on the road, if people were really to listen after you shook their hand for the first time, what would you say to them?

If it's fans I’d just say thank you for being into what I do, it means a lot...

How would you describe your sound to a deaf person?

Via the medium of dance. I play all kinds of music so I would do various routines to describe the different sounds, the dubstep skank, the deep-house shuffle, the electro fist pump and of course the R&B bump ‘n’ grind!

Do you read books on the road? What are you reading right now?

I tend to watch more films than read books but I’ve just read the Alan Partridge autobiography "I Partridge" which made me LOL for about nine solid hours!

What do you look forward to most when the tour is over?

Sleeping in my own bed, I put a lot of effort and research into making it the comfiest place on earth and there's no place like it!

Do you remember the first time you had a live audience’s complete attention? Do you remember how you felt at that moment, what records you were playing?

Yep, I’ve been DJing for about 12 years and before I was known I used to play in some terrible clubs where I had to play requests for idiots that would ask for the worst music. My dream was to one day play a set where the crowd would come to see what I would play and trust me on my selection. I won a DJ competition to play with Armand Van Helden and Fatboy Slim and got the closing set and it was such an amazing moment! It’s too easy to forget stuff like that and take it for granted these days so thanks for the reminder!
