EDM Culture: Joachim Garraud, Beatport, Jason Bentley, Ultra Music and All Gone Pete Tong

We're getting ready to call it a night and thought we'd share a few EDM culture headlines catching our eye. Joachim Garraud, Beatport, Jason Bentley, Ultra Music and All Gone Pete Tong...

Robert Sillerman Buying Beatport?

Here's a good one from the rumor mill, word has it that Robert Sillerman is buying Beatport. There's no ink behind this statement and as far as we know there hasn't even been an official comment about it, but that is what we're hearing. Not sure what that would mean for the future of Beatport, at least how we know it today. I know it's a super popular site and everyone jocks the chart, but I can't help but wonder how many people are actually buying music on the site. It seems more like an awesome resource to hear what's out there more than a place to purchase music. Seems like Beatport could do a helluva lot better if they turned things into a destination site. That's our two cents anyway…

Jason Bentley Bringing Back Metropolis

There's typically not much to celebrate when it comes to radio. LA has more to offer than most cities… and it sounds like it's going to get even better. Not sure if Jason Bentley has made any official announcement, but continuing with the rumors, we hear that Bentley's show Metropolis is coming back to the airwaves on Saturday nights. Bentley did the show for 16 years (it was one the first things we feel in love with about this city after moving here in 2000) but he stopped after taking over as Music Director for KCRW.

Ultra Music x Sony Music Entertainment

Wowzers, Patrick Moxey is now President of Sony’s newly formed Electronic Music division. As if Moxey and Ultra Music weren't already making a big impact on EDM culture's landscape, this new gig puts him in "Made" man status. Billboard's Kerri Mason caught up with Moxey at midnight in France, after a long day at MIDEM. You can read the interview here.

All Gone Pete Tong on Iheart Radio

Since I talked radio and Beatport, figured I'd give a shout out to the "All Gone Pete Tong" show. If you're not already tuned in, each and every day of the week brings some of the best new dance music. Tong’s daily two-hour show, that anchors "Evolution," includes his Essential New Tune Of The Week, and hit songs from the global Beatport Chart, a radio exclusive for Pete Tong. This week Tong also has a guest mix from Zedd, and a ton of brand new music. The week's Essential New Tune is "Need U (100%)" by Duke Dumont, which also happens to be in our Top Ten Singles chart we put out this morning. Just saying. BTW, Pete also voice-tracks the daytime playlist of Evolution, everyday on 101.7 FM Boston terrestrial, from 5-7 pm. For more highlights of "All Gone Pete Tong" go here.

Joachim Garraud Launches New Label, Space Invader Music

Nice to see that the French producer Joachim Garraud is doing his part in helping the next generation of EDM producers rise to the top. After a recent relocation of home and studio to Los Angeles from his native Paris, Joachim Garraud set up Space Invader Music as a way to give some shine to greenhorn producers who operate in the dancefloor-oriented electro and techno arenas. The first release on the imprint, “Maximus,” is the latest single from the label boss himself and is available on all major DSPs on February 4th followed by a full remix package on February 18th. Here's Joachim Garraud speaking about the label.
