Review: The Orb Featuring Lee 'Scratch' Perry “Ball of Fire” via Cooking Vinyl—Dabrye, Deadbeat and Mad Professor Remixes

Review: The Orb Featuring Lee 'Scratch' Perry “Ball of Fire” Cooking Vinyl

Veteran UK producers, the Orb, have a new 12-inch single featuring dub legend Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry. Kicking off the follow up to last year’s The ORBservers in the Starhouse collaboration between the veteran producers and Perry, “Ball of Fire,” is a full-featured single with remixes from Dabrye, Deadbeat and Mad Professor.

The original mix is a trippy dub house composition mixed with the now 74-year-old Upsetter's mind altered flow. Simultaneously as haunting as it celebratory, Perry's scat-like lyrics and vocal delivery seem to be signs of an artist riding strong creative momentum. Montreal's ambient dub master Deadbeat comes in with the NYAH remix which is a bit more stripped down but equally bouncy. Dabrye pulls out the organ grinder and his signature hip-hop trip, pulling in the vocals as needed and sprinkling in a little guitar. Mad Professor grabs the last slot, and proves why he is one of the leading innovators of the electro-dub sound.

All in all, a worthwhile record that's well produced and indicative of the continued vibe on The Orb and Perry's new album More tales from the ORBservatory, set to be released June 3rd. The single is out May 13th on Cooking Vinyl.
