New York’s longest running underground house music and techno institution, Sullivan Room, takes the leap from nightclub to Record label this September, kicking off Sullivan Room Records with "The Day I Set You Free" ft. Daniel Wilde by Meandisco.
The Sullivan Room Records imprint will launch in September as a platform for releasing music from artists associated with the events held at the infamous Sullivan Room in New York. Here the label offers up a single from founder Meandisco, who is behind the brand alongside SR Serge of Grass Is Greener fame; Gene delivers a striking indication of what’s to come from the label.
The main mix of "The Day I Set You Free' opens the single here, a low-slung, dropped-tempo number, employing gritty bass tones, sparse drum programming and retro arp-lines as its driving force. Meandisco then breaks things down in the centre stages with an emotive piano chord progression and captivating spoken word vocals before reverting back to the infectious groove.
Stepping up next Bruni & Danielle rework ‘The Day I Set You Free’, tipping the focus towards a more direct, dance floor feel. With busy drum programming, saw-wave bass stabs and rounded sub hits, while dubbed out chords, processed vocals and tension-building strings flourish in the depths of the background.
Entering the latter half of the EP, The Scrumfrog turns in an interpretation of the lead cut, opting for bumpy, swinging drums this time, as swirling synth sequences, an amalgamation of snippets of the original vocal, and intermittent automation touches, creates a blossoming dynamic throughout.
To close the release, Meandisco drops the ‘Original Full Length’ of ‘The Day I Set You Free’, as the name would suggest, the mix is drawn out with a stunning intro section, and a smooth progressive feel.
Meandisco’s ‘The Day I Set You Free’ is out on Sullivan Room Records 21st September 2013. If you're in NYC there will be a release party at the venue, with Kaizer Souzai, Grass Is Greener and Meandisco performing. RSVP@sullivanroom.com
