There really isn't anything more exciting than prepping for an EDM culture event... Practicing your gloving skills, shuffling down the grocery store isles, getting ready with friends, and listening to music- hyping yourself up to dance all night almost gives an adrenaline rush. In San Diego, the party doesn't just start the day of the event, it is a week long celebration. Tramps Like Us could have simply been a 2-Day event, but instead- LED (My Life Every Day) raised the bar, and brought Tramps beyond the Valley View Casino Center, and out in the city to both those who were unable to attend, as well as the die-hard music lovers. Read on for our recap!
The venue itself proved to be the perfect host, and even though the will-call line initially got wildly out of control, LED staff was on hand and handled the chaos without conflict. The security staff was entertaining to say the least, and the venue staff was pleasant to work with. They were there for the event as much as the ticket holders... something you don't see too often! Even some of the hired police officers were seen dancing around in the street. San Diego's finest just gained a few points in our book.
Attendees that were fortunate enough to experience the Los Angeles Sports Arena would agree that when you enter the Valley View Casino Center, you get instant Déjà vu of Together As One, Electric Daisy Carnival, and Love Festivals of the past. And those who never tasted the Los Angeles party scene definitely got the feel of it. Some will argue that an event is an event, I would dare to say that the venue creates more than half of the experience. The spacious layout gave way to dancers, glovers, and music lovers from all walks of life. The lighting and production value of every set was on point- lasers, fog, strobing lights pulsating with the beats, confetti and visuals were everywhere, and produced with talent. The sound was perfect, no volume limitations, and the bass wasn't overly brain-rattling. You could hear the music from anywhere inside the arena. The field was a sea of neon lights, just as it should be. Attendees were invited to dance virtually anywhere, and staff was not rude or forceful when walkways needed to be cleared. In fact, we have to shout out to the security gaurd who was seen shuffling throughout the venue, you were a memorable highlight!
Saturday's Set of the night went to Quintino. I have never seen so many smiles, tears, and groups of friends holding to each other as a family. Quintino brought every element of dance music to his set, and it's safe to say that every person in the arena felt it.
Sundays's Set of the Night is awarded to Chuckie, as I am sure the majority of festival attendees would agree. The vivacious vibes that the DJ put out into the crowd was overwhelming. At one point, every attendee was crouched down on the ground, and grew with Chuckie as the music grew and dropped. The proof is in the people- the music really connects us, and Chuckie just proved it.
Recognition goes out to Danny Avila and Gareth Emery for pulling off two sets in a night. Friday night Danny Avila brought the Tramps vibe to Voyeur in the Gaslamp before his TLU set. Likewise, on Sunday, Gareth Emery brought the energy from Tramps to Voyeur and got the entire city fist pumping. Kudos to both!
We can't go without mention of Sunday night's surprise artist. He's loud, crazy, and completley addicted to shattering basslines... None other than 12th Planet. There are no words to describe the hype that commenced as the King of Bass stepped up to the decks. The only way to describe the energy that 12th Planet gave San Diego? A completely audacious takeover.
Overall- the event was well managed, spacious enough for two-sold out nights, and filled with some of EDM's most revered talent. Thank you, San Diego EDM culture for being awesome, and Thank You, LED for continually delivering some of the best events in the city.
Don't forget to get your tickets to Mad Decent Block Party on September 15th, hosted by LED, showcasing the talents of Major Lazer, Zeds Dead, Dillon Francis, and more!
