A great week for funky hip hop left field, downtempo, and breaks tunes. I did a little searching to freshen up our Fort Knox Five DJ sets. I think I found some jams! It is bitter cold in the District of Columbia (see photo above), but music always warms me up!
1. KENDRA MORRIS - CONCRETE WAVES (DJ PREMIER REMIX)
Wow!! This is amazing! Thanks to David for sending this my way. My partner Steve and I heard the original on an NPR interview a few months back, and thought it was fantastic. Kendra Morris is someone to definitely watch out for. Her voice is golden, and this remix of her debut single CONCRETE WAVES by the legendary DJ PREMIER is an instant classic.
2. THOMAS BLONDET feat CAROL C. - UN AMOR (KALEIDOSCOPE JUKEBOX TANGO DUB REMIX) - RHYTHM & CULTURE
This is the first single from Thomas Blondet's upcoming FUTUREWORLD album coming out on Washington, DC based Rhythm & Culture. Thomas featured Carol C on this track. Her voice is amazing. The Kaleidoscope Jukebox remix is definitely a downtempo tune made for the floor.
3. DAVID DUNDAS - JEANS ON (DJ RUNDOWN RE-WORK)
This is a classic feel good tune that many of you heard in a recent jeans ad. The song is actually a classic tune by Lord David Dundas. It was originally recorded back in the late 70s for Jeans advert, but then David recorded it as a proper full song. DJ RUNDOWN sent me his awesome version. It is definitely something that will bring out smiles in everyone.
4. ZION-I - SUPREME - MASTERS OF CEREMONY EP
Zion-I is definitely a group that is pushing the barriers of hip hop meeting electronic. The duo consisting of producer AMPLIVE and MC ZUMBI are a force to be reckoned with. The Masters of Ceremony EP is excellent. The song Supreme, samples my favorite Shirley Bassey cover version of the Door's song LIGHT MY FIRE. This is a real hip hop tune that I can get behind!
5. THE CHEMICAL BROTHERS - BLOCK ROCKING BEATS (FAT CATS REMIX)
Here is a classic throwback jam. This is definitely one of the songs that got me into raving so many years ago. Back when raving was really raving! The FAT CATS crew are from Manchester, and do a really nice remix on this old school CHEMICAL BROTHERS tune. Not heavy on the vocals, but with a really bubbly funky bass line chop up and nice new acid synth! I am digging this!
6. TY - IT'S ALL RIGHT - TRU THOUGHTS
This track is from the 3rd single in TY's KICK SNARE & AN IDEA series. This single was just released on one of my favorite label's for well over a decade, TRU THOUGHTS. This is another fine example of real hip hop. It feels so refreshing to hear these lyrics and these phat beats. Hip Hop is alive and well. Just not on mainstream radio!
7. SCHLACHTHOFBRONX vs SABO vs NADASTROM - NEGRA LINDA - SOL SELECTAS
This heavyweight collab featuring Munich's SCHLACHTHOFBRONX, NY/LA's DJ SABO, and DC/LA's NADSTROM has serious latin funk bomb written all over it! These 3 are currently doing a Moombahton Massive tour on the East Coast, and dropped this EP to promote the run. Don't sleep on the EP. This joint is madness!
8. NEON STEVE - UP ALL NIGHT
When I talk about people to watch for, this guy is definitely towards the top of the up and coming list. NEON STEVE is from Victoria, BC, and is another western Canadian who makes serious bangers! I have been in need of more Funky Acid Breaks. Up All Night just filled that void! Nice work brother! This is right in my crate!
9. RIDE JAMES BROWN - SUPERBAD (SPORTY-O & KISSKAYA REMIX)
This is an absolute swing house banger! SPORTY-O steps away from his roll as a killer MC, and joins up with KISSKAYA to remix the classic SUPERBAD by the Godfather of Soul, JAMES BROWN! This is a full on primetime burner that will get even squarest of crowds jamming!
10. THE TURTLES - HAPPY TOGETHER (LOVE AND LIGHT REMIX)
My good friends Matt and Ryan from LOVE AND LIGHT made a banger remix of the classic feel good TURTLES jam, HAPPY TOGETHER. It has been a little while since we have seen a remix from these guys. This puts them right back on track. This is a surefire party rocker with massive beats, and the phattest bass. We have seen this one rock the floor. Nice work fellas!
