By Jon Horvath of Fort Knox Five
This winter has been brutally cold, but here is some dope music to warm you up. This week’s chart is full of great world music, future funk, reggae, Latin, and everything in between. Every one of these tunes could heat up any dance floor. Load up your dj crate, or ipod, either way these tunes are all good!
PRINCE FATTY – FOR ME YOU ARE FEAT. HOLLIE COOK (MUNGO’S HI FI MIX) – MR BONGO
Some absolutely sick reggae vibes from the outstanding Prince Fatty featuring Hollie Cook. This track combines old school vibes, modern bass elements and excellent drum programming. This is taken from the upcoming Prince Fatty vs Mungo’s Hi Fi Remix LP. All the remixes are FIRE!
NOVALIMA – MAMAYE (NAPPY RIDDEM REMIX)
I have been hearing lots of great world vibes lately. This remix by Nappy Riddem of the Novalima tune Mamaye is extra sexy. The Nappy Riddem crew is great with drums and percussion. The beats are strong, and the vocals are excellent!
AFROQBEN – HYNOTIZE ME
AfroQben and I made a long drive after Shambhala from Nelson to Vancouver. I have known him for a while, but had not heard all of his tunes. He played this one for me and I was blown away. He does excellent bass lines, and really makes it a smooth rework. Definitely watch this guy in the future.
THE THREE DEGREES – YOU’RE THE FOOL (SLYNK REMIX 2014 REMASTER)
This is one of the first tunes I heard from Slynk back in 2009. He released a slew of banging funky remixes and edits. At the time, the mastering on this remix was not great. He decided to go back, and remaster it a couple of weeks ago. Now it sounds proper! This is definitely a super funk soul jam!
BIG GIGANTIC – BLUE DREAM
We have watched Big Gigantic grow to epic proportions over the last few years. These guys have truly blown up. They incorporate live instrumentation into their sets, and it is awesome. B.G. consists of Dominic Lalli (producer and ridiculous sax player), and Jeremy Salken (wicked drummer). For a two man show, they carry so much energy! Get familiar with Big Gigantic.
OUTERNATIONAL - CANTA EL RIO WITH CECI BASTIDA (UPROOT ANDY REMIX)
Uproot Andy is one producer/dj that I think is amazing. He edits and remixes Cumbia, world beats, Latin, and eastern vibes. This remix of Outernational is dope. It is very slow and dubby, but carries this huge energy. I love songs that are slow, but can release and build and amazing tension. This is one of those tunes!
MISSY ELLIOT – GET UR FREAK ON (NEON STEVE REMIX)
The original Get Ur Freak On was so big, and had so many remixes that after a while you just wanted it to go away. Now this Neon Steve Remix is frickin’ sick! Seriously! I will probably be playing this in every set for the next couple of months! Nice work Neon Steve! Thanks for bringing this one back!
ULTRAISTA – SMALL TALK (FOUR TET REMIX – JUSTIN MARTIN REWORK)
This is a jam. Justin Martin did a rework of Four Tet’s remix of Small Talk. I love smooth funky housey breaks like this. It is really weird and spacey. The bird noises will freak you out at first, but they sound good in the club! Pretty much anything that either Justin Martin or Four Tet touches is amazing. This rework is great!
BONOBO – LES LABAS (BONOBO REMIX)
This is my favorite tune out of the bunch. Bonobo is a legend. His knowledge of music and live instrumentation make him a top producer, remixer, dj, and arranger of music. This remix is absolutely beautiful with amazing catchy vocals, and a bubbling bass line. I wish I had a whole crate of tunes like this.
DUCK SAUCE – LOUIE THE FIRST
When you team up Armand Van Helden and A-Trak, you would expect to get a banger. That is what we have here! A certified banger! This is from the Duck Droppings EP, which is a free download from their soundcloud. I highly advise getting this whole package, but Louie is my jam. It combines a funky breakbeat with some oldies vocals and a disco loop. The result is amazing!
