NERVO: Inspired- A Near Perfect Mix For Ministry Of Sound

The second release in Ministry Of Sound’s acclaimed “Inspired” compilation series comes from Australian DJ/producer duo NERVO. The sisters, Olivia and Miriam (Liv and Mim for short), were enlisted by the famed London nightclub slash record label to put together a mix of music that has influenced their career.  Divided into two sets, appropriately titled ''Present and Future Inspirations" and  “Past Inspirations”, the result is an impressive collage that, for all intents and purposes, shows the world how DJing should be done in 2014.

Liv and Mim kick off the first mix, “Present and Future Inspirations”, with Prok & Fitch's "Man With A Soul" leading into Phunk Investigation's "It's Star Time". While both songs are relatively recent releases, they hark back to a generation where clubs were the lay of the land and funky house was king. A shift towards the modern festival era ramps up when they drop the Carl Louis & Martin Danielle's remix of  "Something To Believe In", allowing the track’s electro-clash vibe to segue perfectly into Hardwell and MAKJ’s electro house hit “Countdown”.  This is where Nervo hits their stride- delivering the bangers and exclusives yes, but also keeping enough classic DNA interwoven in the mix to remind us where we came from.

The "Past Inspirations" mix uses a similar strategy as found on disc one, but this time allows for more modern sounds to influence NERVO's selection of classics. They disperse “still in heavy rotation” tracks like the Ida Corr vs Fedde Le Grand's "Let Me Think About It" and Fatboy Slim's "Praise You" with more subdued (at least by today’s standards), yet still essential house music and electronica cuts. The result is a mix of songs from electronic music’s early age that sounds refreshingly up to date.

NERVO executes this mix so flawlessly because they stay true to the oft-forgotten art of DJing.  Each song is carefully selected and blended immaculately. The transitions are well thought out and meaningful, designed to take us on a journey. This establishes a loose narrative that helps to unify the compilation.  Modern sounds breathe new life into old classics; and old classics serve to remind us where these modern sounds came from.
