Magnetic's Montréal Dispatch: All Aboard for Igloofest!
The annual winter pilgrimage to Montréal’s idyllic, ice enshrined Old Port is once more in full flow! For those who don't know, Igloofest is a month-long festival in Montreal with shows every weekend.
After a massive opening weekend, which saw big hitters like Gui Boratto, Justin Martin and Flosstradamus get the party started, Igloofest powered on, launching weekend 002 with the hard-hitting grooves of tech maestro Loco Dice.
With such a fine array of local and international talent on offer, an appearance was simply essential and Saturday’s bill promised Cocoon/Drumcode veteran Joel Mull (a late yet worthy replacement for Deetron), the mystical Rune Reilly Kölsch and some of Montréal’s finest up & coming artists.
Hats and scarfs were donned along with plenty of leopard print jackets and outrageous fur coats (Igloozoo being the theme of the weekend), and Kölsch got the ball rolling in the same fashion. The great Dane treated festival goers to a beautiful blend of upfront beats and intricate, emotive melodies. Recent release "Punchbuggy" had the crowd pumped, reminiscent of an enormous après ski, the crowd was boppin’ and shakin’ amid an electric atmosphere.
Joel Mull picked up the mantle eagerly. By the time he took to the main stage, the self-confined made-to-order electronic music fortress was burgeoning. Mull rinsed a powerful collection of industrial techno cuts, keeping the energy high right to the finish.
Honorable mentions must go to Montréal locals Ponsolo & LeDisko, who led the charge at the second stage. The pair truly exploited the surround sound cove that was the Scene Videotron Mobile, blasting out a killer mix of tunes ranging from laidback vocal weapons to in-your-face bass-heavy dingers. Their fine form resulted deservedly in a sizeable queue outside the stage. The Contrôle at Stereo Bar residents are poised to sculpt Montréal’s house and tech sound over the years to come. Keep an eye out!
Big ups to the Piknic Électronik team, they proved once more why Montréal is renowned as a city of festivals. Organisation, curation and execution of the highest standard makes Igloofest one of standout festivals on the planet, an offering adored by attendees and DJs alike, it certainly provides a unique festival experience. With the likes of John Digweed, Blond:ish, M.A.N.D.Y. and Montréal's own prodigal son Tiga still to come in the 2015 edition, I very much recommend getting down!
In fact, we'll be featuring select live performances from the festival on the Magnetic homepage sidebar moving forward so keep your eyes peeled!
We’ll have more on Montréal soon. It’s a metropolis brimming with art, culture and music, a city filled with innovators constantly trying to break down barriers and showcase art and music in new and interesting ways. Over the coming months, we’ll be here to share all those experiences with you guys. Stay tuned!
