London-based musicians Alfie Granger-Howell and Nick Harriman are Dusky making house music with a distinctly UK underground edge. Dusky's sound is influenced by everything from deep Detroit techno and bumping UK garage to classical and jazz to avant-garde electronica. Their diverse 2011 album Stick By This was celebrated by Pete Tong as one of the albums of the year. Singles like “Tyto Alba” and “Flo Jam” on Dogmatik have blown up as house/garage straddling underground anthems, while Hot Chip wasted no time in commissioning them to transform their “Night & Day” single into a modern garage bomb. As comfortable writing elegant orchestral pieces or stirring piano motifs as they are jackin’ house and epic techno grooves, Dusky’s diverse sounds are united by the duo’s singular aim—to compose electronic music with depth, soul and originality. The duo's emphasis on musical depth rather than genre restrictions has seen their compositions playedby DJs as diverse as PVincenzo, Zane Lowe, MJ Cole, Dubfire, Sasha and Laurent Garnier. At the same time, darker excursions into warehouse techno like “Calling Me” and “Muriel” have been hammered by Paul Woolford, Maya Jane Coles and Loefa. Also existing as progressive/melodic house entity Solarity, they conceived their Dusky moniker as an outlet for their more organic, wide-ranging sounds – a deeply musical expansion of their nocturnal inspirations. Always intelligent, effortlessly intricate and often emotive, Dusky’s sound glides across genres easily. With their debut single “Lost in You” (Feat vocalist Janai) offering a soul-drenched summer house anthem, the duo’s debut album Stick By This was described as "an intoxicating album full of flashes of brilliance and innovation" by DJMag. With the album touching on ambient, dub, electronica and their organic take on house and techno, Dusky has quickly marked themselves out as producers with a uniquely broad appeal. Dance legend Pete Tong plays them on BBC Radio 1 and DJs hammer their tracks. Dusky will continue to naturally shift into new sound worlds, always united by the duo’s aim of composing electronic music with depth, soul, and originality.
