In the wake of the tragedy that killed 32 and injured nearly 180 patrons during a nightclub fire in Bucharest, the Romanian Prime Minister has resigned.
Ponta Victo, the former Prime Minister of Romania, has been under heavy scrutiny over the past month with allegations of tax fraud and corruption. After the deadly club fire that occurred this past weekend, 20,000 citizens took to the streets to express their concern and to call for cabinet members to resign. Dragnea, the leader of Social Democratic Party in Romania, expressed that it was necessary for the Prime Minister to take responsibility.
“Victor Ponta is giving up his mandate. Someone needs to assume responsibility for what has happened. This is a serious matter and we promise a quick resolution of the situation. You probably noticed thousands of people last evening and what they demanded.”
Protesters state that poor city planning and corruption caused the tragedy to escalate due to lack of safety precautions and having only one exit at the venue. They claim that permits should never have been granted to the venue and if a proper safety inspection had taken place, the venue would not have been allowed to throw such an event.
It's being reported that 130 people are still hospitalized with dozens in critical condition.
