So you've got your Coachella lineup all sorted out and think you're indie because you're going to catch Beach House, A$AP Rocky, and Disclosure. We don't want to take anything away from those artists but there's much more to discover at Coachella than the headliners. As a matter of fact, Coachella is completely ripe with very interesting underground talent this year and we came up with ten cutting edge artists that you must not miss at the festival.
THE ARCS (SATURDAY)
The Newly formed rock band which features The Black Keys frontman Dan Auerbach isn't just another mammoth rock project for Dan to take all the credit for. The Arcs is a project which is an equal collaborative effort from all members of the band. In addition, the band features a Brooklyn-based, all-female mariachi band Mariachi Flor de Toloache on many of the tracks as guest vocalists. So expect more than just a hi-octane blues rock set from the newly formed five member rockers because The Arcs don't play by anyone's rules but their own.
BEDOUIN (SUNDAY) - WEEKEND 2 ONLY
When it comes to the deeper and more mystical side of house music, many names come to mind but none roll off the tongue any easier than the Brooklyn based DJ duo known as Bedouin.
Since their formation in 2014, the guys have already recorded for Kindisch, Get Physical, Supernature, and of course Lee Burridge's own All Day I Dream imprint. In addition to their recording resume, they've already played for some of the best out there such as the SX Music Festival in St Maarten, Mysteryland in New York and not to mention, Robot Heart at Burning Man. So come catch the guys at the Do Lab on Sunday for the second weekend of Coachella.
THE BLACK MADONNA (SATURDAY)
Since becoming Chicago's Smart Bar resident in late 2012, the DJ & Producer we all know as The Black Madonna has been turning the dance music world upside down with her punk rock aesthetic. She doesn't believe in the status quo, which has shown through in her DJ sets and her productions as well as with her position as Smart Bar's creative director. So this coming Saturday at Coachella, get set for a very rare West Coast appearance by The Black Madonna herself!
OONA DAHL (SUNDAY) - WEEKEND 2 ONLY
Oona Dahl has been weaving her musical magic with utterly smooth and melodic DJ sets all over the globe and come the second weekend of Coachella at The Do Lab, she is sure to make an astounding debut.
Born in DC, raised in Maryland, and educated in New York, R&B vocalist Christopher Gallant better known simply as Gallant has what may be one of the best falsettos in recent memory. In addition, his debut album, Ology was just released on Wednesday and it's definitely a contender for album of the year. Not only is Gallant one of the must-see up and coming artists at this year's festival, he is one of the must-see artists overall!
JOEY BADA$$ (FRIDAY)
21 year-old Jo-Vaughn Virginie Scott better known by his stage name Joey Bada$$ has been writing music and poetry since age 11. Fast-forward to just ten years later, the unapologetically brash rapper has four critically acclaimed mix-tapes along with his studio album which was just released a few months ago. Joey Bada$$ is the hip-hop artist you do not want to miss at Coachella.
The newly reunited shoe-gazing legends have come back together just in time for a highly anticipated Coachella performance.
Founded in 2013 by Rafael Reyes and Dave Parley, Prayers are the first band to coin the term “cholo goth” to define their musical style. Exploring the harsh realities of gang/street life over throbbing beats, their music defies stereotypes within the goth and cholo subcultures all the while creating their own underground scene.
Samuel Long has already produced for artists such as Charlie XCX and Madonna but more importantly he's come up with his own brand of hyperkinetic pop music under the alias of SOPHIE. Without a doubt, SOPHIE is the most original artist appearing at this year's festival.
WALKER & ROYCE (SATURDAY) - WEEKEND 2 ONLY
The Brooklyn house music duo known as Walker & Royce have been producing together since 2011 and they've already unleashed some massive underground tunes on labels such as Crosstown Rebels, Moda Black, ViVa Music, and many more. Keep in mind that the guys play weekend two only so make sure you stop by The Do Lab for a set that's sure to take it to the next level.
