Chicago is full of ground breaking music festivals; anywhere from Lollapoolza to the Blues Festival and beyond. However, Mamby On The Beach is going to be one of the top festivals to hit this summer. While only being in it’s second year, it has already started a massive following, with nothing but positive vibes surrounding it. It's the only Chicago music festival that you can get beachfront access while listening to your favorite music with your festival family. Mamby on the Beach, with it’s new beginnings, is on the cusp of being one of the best music festivals Chicago has to offer.
With the festival being just around the corner, we thought it appropriate to put together a list of ten tracks to get your ready for the wonderful weekend of music.
Kaytranada - 'Glowed Up'
Kaytranda’s colourful personality beams through his music with soft undertones of hip-hop and R&B. 'Glowed Up' is the epitome of his sound. Having recently released his debut album, 99.9%, he's been an artist on everyone's radar. Thankfully, he is making one of his stops at Mamby.
Audion - 'Sky'
Audion is the alias of the well-respected artist Matthew Dear. While Audion’s sound has a harder edge, Dear's quality production shines through, revealing a captivating and hypnotic motif. The city of Chicago best knows Audion and Matthew Dear from his multiple performances at Paradigm Presents events. His music is a major highlight at any festival and venue he performs. Dear will never stop with his Audion alias claiming that “it never gets old” to switch up his style.
FKJ - 'Lying Together'
Sweetly named French Kiwi Juice is a self-taught producer and DJ from Paris. He fits right into the Chicago scene with his French funk sound, while his mellow style will be perfect for the festival on the beach. FKJ is on an international tour at the moment, but he still finds time to hang out poolside with friends and produce new tracks. This is one of our all-time favorites.
The Black Madonna - 'Exodus'
The Black Madonna is Chicago's Smart Bar resident DJ and creative director. With her big personality, her music follows suite with her authentic style. She sticks to soulful house while spinning vinyl and "Exodus" is a clear representation of her dynamic ability. You can hear the raw essence and all the heart she puts into each movement. Trust us, you don't want to miss her set.
Derrick Carter - Boiler Room Session
To follow along with The Black Madonna, Derrick Carter is a resident of the Smart Bar as well. He is well known for his iconic house and hip-hop influences. Derrick Carter started off as a bedroom jock playing old school disco, and made his influence with his 1988 EP release with Mark Farina and Chris Nazuka. Even with all of his fame and influential power, he has managed to stay underground, keeping the true nature of dance music at the heart of his sound.
Tycho - 'Awake'
Tycho is a producer and DJ mainly sticking to ambient and chillwave sounds. What sets him apart from other producers is his use of analogue media within his music. Since 2010, he has been known to bring his own band to play during his sets. While Tycho is touring this festival season, he has been producing in his free time between planes and shows. It's easy to get lost in his sound and we can't wait for his performance at Mamby.
Sonny Fodera - 'Shake'
Sonny Fodera is unmistakably house, perfect for a Chicago festival. Coming all the way from Australia, he started his career making hip-hop. He is signed to Ghostly International, which also has Tycho and Matthew Dear (who founded the label) signed as well. Derrick Carter has also given him praise for his House technique. We should expect to see him working and collabing with many artists in the near future.
Chromeo - 'Sexy Socialite'
Chromeo is a duo from Montreal, calling themselves “funklords.” Dave 1 and P Thugg have an eclectic sound stemming from funk, jazz, and electro. In 2004, the duo put themselves in the spotlight with their album She’s In Control. 'Sexy Socialite; is from their most recent and fourth studio album, White Women, and is a representation of the band's evolution. While the duo has not released much recently, they have toured internationally and are making a stop at Mamby, which is definitely a special treat.
Chrome Sparks - 'Mannus and Venus'
Chrome Sparks is Jeremy Malvin’s solo project. While he was born in Pittsburgh, he has based himself in Brooklyn and draws inspiration from a plethora of sources. You can hear undertones of Brooklyn rock and blues within his music. He sticks to classical percussion and is obsessed with his synthesizers. He recently worked with the Psychic Twins to put out a new mix-tape and is constantly working on new music.
Make Mamby on the Beach your number one hang out for July 4 weekend and we promise you won’t be upset. Thankfully you can still buy tickets for two day and single day excursions. If you aren’t done dancing on the beach, head over to the official after-parties to keep the party going.
Don’t forget your swim suit and sunscreen, and we'll see you at the festival!
