On Sunday nights from 6pm to midnight, Guy Gerber throws a free beachside party on the Spanish island of Ibiza, Rumors. It started in 2014 and has quickly become an island staple while Gerber expands and takes it worldwide. After incarnations in Miami and Mexico, Rumors finally made its way to the West Coast for a recent
For the first time, they received permission to host this party at the outdoor, historic Gin Ling Way square in the heart of Chinatown. The production designers did an excellent job transforming and highlighting the space without infringing on its soul, and made sure to include little delightful surprises for the people.
Gerber knows his audience and picked a perfect opener, DJ Harvey. When we arrived at 8pm, the party was already full-force: DJ Harvey always draws the crowd out early. His extended set ran over three hours and traversed a breadth of classic and fresh sounds.
Then, when Gerber took to the decks, the roar of the party came alive. I only caught a glimpse of his set at Lightning in a Bottle, and thus I missed out then on one of his signature skills: crafting a journey over hours that matches the night. Due to the restrictions of the venue, the show ended pretty promptly after midnight, but he could have probably continued another couple hours.
Lately, the party's come under some strain: the Ibizan government's shifting unease with the party-centric reputation of the island has led to police crackdowns including the forced cancellation of a RUMORS party last year. The situation came to a head when tINI's beach party was banned earlier this week. While Rumors continues its weekly Ibiza parties for now, we expect we'll see more branching out into international events as the longtime party island continues its bitter evolution.
