There is an abundance of top quality house music coming out at the moment and it's getting hard to pick just 10 artists a month. Our July 2016 list with Traxsource includes music from artists such as Chris Stussy who is only twenty-one years old, and labels like Freerange who are celebrating twenty years in the industry. That young artists and older respected players are putting out such great releases, demonstrates both the longevity and the good health of our scene - it’s a great time to be into house music!
Here’s our selection for July:
UK label boss, Producer and DJ Jimpster has been a fixture on the house scene for many years now, his pitch-perfect productions are a constant source of ‘go-to’ tracks for DJs. Aside from his own productions and remixes, he is of course well known for co-running Freerange Records, who are celebrating twenty successful years in the business with a series of EPs. Volume 5 in their ’20 Years of Freerange’ series is released on August 22nd and features Jimpster’s big vocal collaboration with Laura Barrick ‘Ceilings’ and three other original tracks from Brian Ring, Clavis, and Shur-I-Kan. This is yet another great reminder of Freerange's relevance in today's house scene. Big release!
2. Josh Butler
DJ Mag award winner and all round rising star Josh Butler (MadTech, Noir, Cajual, Defected) is having a great year, with a string of hot Tech House releases that have found their way into the playlists of many top jocks. Following on from the rolling percussion-fest that was his killer ‘Link’ EP on Rejected, Josh is back with a smooth, accomplished vocal house cut ‘On The Edge’ on Defected, featuring vocals from Kerrie-Anne, which drops on 11th July. We are also much looking forward to getting Josh in the studio for Traxsource LIVE! on the 22nd July.
3. Gene Farris
Take classic Chicago house producer Gene Farris, put him together in the studio with a bunch of the hottest house producers around, leave to percolate and the result is In The Screen, a full-length album featuring eleven tracks of house goodness. Dropping on Relief on July 8th, In The Screen features huge collaborations with the likes of Loco Dice, Sonny Fodera, Mihalis Safras, Nathan Barato, Jesse Rose, and more. Expect eleven examples of contemporary Chicago house at its finest.
4. Kings of Tomorrow / Sandy Rivera
Big tune alert! House stalwart Sandy Rivera is back under his Kings of Tomorrow alias with a classy vocal track featuring the svelte vocals of Alex Mills. Big room production, smooth chords, a strong song and a passionately delivered vocal all add up to a near-perfect summertime party soundtrack.
Chymera is the artist name of Irish producer Brendan Gregory (Dirt Crew, Ovum, NRK, Cocoon, Figure etc.), who has cooked up a tasty treat for us this month. Released on the 4th July, his epic ‘Episode’ EP on Cocoon features 3 tracks of skillfully executed melodic techno, in a similar vein to Chymera’s previous release on Ovum, the excellent ‘Divided Self’ EP which picked up DJ support from Tensnake, Lee Burridge and Heidi amongst others.
6. Black Loops
Italian production duo Black Loops feature on the first instalment in the occasional ‘Jockey Jams’ multi-artist series from Toy Tonics. Featuring four killer cuts from Black Loops, Moritz Butschek & Ferdinand Zar, Pixel82 and Doug Gomez, Black Loops contribute their ‘Sex’ track, a 6 and a half minute deep electronic funk excursion.
7. PBR Streetgang
Production duo Bonar Bradberry and Tom Thorpe, better known as PBR Streetgang (Dirt Crew, 2020 Vision, Red Music, Futureboogie, Defected), drop a huge track this month, in the shape of their ’12:32’ EP on Futureboogie recordings. Expect driving deep house expertly engineered for the dance floor with a slightly more techy remix from UK DJ/Producer/Record Collector Fort Romeau.
Polish producer Michael Radziwanowski has had a string of quality house releases under his MRJ alias on Simma Black, Country Club Disco and Disco Kicks amongst others, and is now dropping his debut full-length album Solid Render on the 11th July on Country Club Disco. Consisting of 8 original house tracks, packed full of a delicious blend of 90s-esque b-lines and vocal samples, hints of UK Garage / Bass blended with classic US deep house, and all produced in a totally contemporary style.
9. KI Creighton
DJ/Producer/Promoter KI Creighton drops his ‘House Season’ EP which is already getting national airplay in the UK as well as plenty of big name DJ support. ‘House Season’ is a 5 tracker, featuring three original house cuts in Ki’s trademark hefty Tech House style, with a pair of superb remixes from Waze & Odyssey (ElRow Music, omni beats, Dirt Crew Recordings) and Max Chapman (MadTech, Snatch!, Lost).
10. Chris Stussy
Newcomer Chris Stussy already has an impressive list of releases on labels like Nite Grooves, Large Music, and Nervous Records. He’ll be adding to his catalogue this month with a brilliant House four-tracker on Large, ‘The Heat’ EP features two tracks of disco-tinged house goodness and two deeper tracks, all four showcasing some serious studio skills. Great EP.
