In a volley of heartfelt tweets, Calvin Harris has publicly addressed recent rumors about Taylor Swift’s involvement in he and Rihanna’s April release, “This Is What You Came For.” The Scottish superstar DJ/producer appears to have been responding specifically to a People article in which one of Swift’s reps confirmed her to have written the song under the alias “Nils Sjoberg.”
Swift - who had been embroiled in a well-publicized romance with Harris up until last month - was speculated to have been working on something with Harris since as far back as Coachella, where she had been spotted wearing a jacket embroidered with a design that also appeared on his Facebook page.
Tenuous as the connection may have been, fans may have been right to read into it. TMZ has reported that the song originated when Swift “wrote the song, sat down at a piano and did a demo into her iPhone,” and sent it to Harris. The two elected to keep her involvement a secret, which led to her using the pseudonym.
Trouble reportedly arose when Ryan Seacrest asked Harris if he was planning to work with Swift in the future, to which he responded that he “couldn’t see it happening.” His remark allegedly led to their relationship’s ultimate downfall, as well as his emotionally charged track, “Olé.”
However, in light of the recent statements made by Swift’s team in regards to her role in “This Is What You Came For,” Harris has responded in a much more direct manner, making the following barrage of tweets:
At this point, though, you have to wonder just how legitimate Harris and Swift’s breakup truly is. Just as how the controversial themes of Beyoncé’s Lemonade stood out as an obvious guerrilla marketing attempt in lieu of actual relationship drama between her and Jay Z, Swift’s rep speaking to the tabloids about her previously confidential role in “This Is What You Came For” seems like an attempt to wrack up more exposure for the track - which just hit 1 million YouTube views as of July 1st.
Nonetheless, Magnetic Magazine will provide further updates on the Calvin Harris/Taylor Swift controversies as either party makes additional statements.
